Since 2011, the Champions Classic has been one of the most anticipated tip off events on the NCAA basketball calendar. The event features four of the top programs in the country in Michigan State, Kentucky, Duke, and Kansas. The Champions Classic is played at a different location each season, with former locations including Madison Square Garden (New York), Georgia Dome (Atlanta), United Center (Chicago), and Bankers Life Fieldhouse (Indianapolis). The Champions Classic consists of two marquee games, played on the same day. Each game pits two of the most iconic programs in college basketball against each other, and is one of the few chances before the NCAA Tournament, to see top programs competing on a neutral court.
2016 Champions Classic Preview
The 2016 Champions Classic will feature 3 teams that reached the Final Four last season. The Champions Classic in 2016 will see the Duke Blue Devils play against the Kansas Jayhawks, then the Kentucky Wildcats will go against the Michigan State Spartans. The Jayhawks will be returning to the game with the strong duo of Frank Mason and Devonte Graham in the point-guard position, which is proven to be an asset to Bill Self’s roster in 2016. Coming into the 2016-2017 season the Duke Blue Devils are expected to be a favorite in the Champions Classic as well as NCAA Champions. Duke has a number of talented upperclassman players as well as a group of freshman that will separate them from the college basketball pack. An exciting matchup in the Champions Classic will be the Spartans vs Wildcats; both were the 2015-2016 Champions for their NCAA conference. John Calipari, head coach of the Wildcats, has been put a lot of focus in their recruiting efforts. As they enter the 2016-2017 season, Kentucky is expected to rank No.1 for their incoming class. With new recruit Miles Bridges taking the place of Michigan’s star player, Denzel Valentine, they have high hopes to take on the Spartans in the 2016 Champions Classic.
