The Rutgers Scarlet Knights represent the largest school in the state of New Jersey. Rutgers has been playing basketball since 1906 and they experienced their greatest success in the 1970’s. The Scarlet Knights were members of the Atlantic 10 Conference from 1976-1995, members of the Big East Conference from 1995-2014, and are currently in their first season as members of the Big Ten Conference.
The Scarlet Knights made their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 1975, losing to the Louisville Cardinals by a score of 91-76 in the first round. In 1976, Rutgers made the NCAA Tournament again and made a lengthier run. After inching past the Princeton Tigers by a score of 54-53 in the first round, Rutgers cruised past the Connecticut Huskies and VMI Keydets in the Sweet Sixteen and the Elite Eight. In the Final Four, the Scarlet Knights played the Michigan Wolverines and lost 86-70. Since their 1976 Final Four appearance, the Scarlet Knights best NCAA Tournament finish was a Sweet Sixteen appearance in 1979.
The Scarlet Knights also have postseason experience in the NIT. Rutgers has 14 NIT appearances with their best finish coming in 2004 when they runners-up to the Michigan Wolverines. The Scarlet Knights have placed third in the NIT twice in 1967 and 1978.
