The South Carolina Gamecocks have been playing basketball for a long time with their first season dating back to 1908. In their history, the Gamecocks have made several NCAA Tournaments and have made it as far as the Sweet Sixteen a few times. South Carolina is a member of the SEC and plays their home games at the Colonial Life Arena.
South Carolina’s best era was the early 1970’s when the Gamecocks made four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances between 1971-1974. In 1971, South Carolina had a bye in the first round and lost to Pennsylvania by a score of 79-64 in the Sweet Sixteen. In 1972, South Carolina played the Temple Owls in the first round and won by a narrow margin of 53-51. The Gamecocks played the North Carolina Tar Heels in the Sweet Sixteen and lost 92-69. In 1973, South Carolina played the Texas Tech Red Raiders in the first round and won 78-70. In the Sweet Sixteen, the Gamecocks played Memphis State and lost 90-76. In the 1974 NCAA Tournament, South Carolina played Furman in the first round and lost 75-67.
South Carolina has also had postseason success in the NIT. South Carolina won their first NIT in 2005 by beating St. Joseph’s in the championship game and won the NIT again in 2006 by beating the Michigan Wolverines in the championship game.
