The Xavier Musketeers Basketball team has one of the most passionate followings of any in the country. Xavier first contested a basketball game in 1920, and has been on a rapid rise through the college basketball ranks since 1980. Although only making the NCAA tournament once before 1980, the Musketeers have made over 20 appearances in the big dance since 1983, including trips to the Elite Eight in 2004 and 2008. Xavier, which had dominated the Atlantic 10 Conference, winning or sharing 8 conference championships from 1997-2011, joined the Big East Conference following the 2012-2013 season. The move to the Big East has ignited an already basketball addicted fan base, and placed the Musketeers in one of the premier basketball leagues in the country. Some of college basketball’s most memorable players have helped build this tradition at Xavier with names like David West, Jordan Crawford, Derrick Brown, James Posey, Byron Larkin, Tyrone Hill, and Brian Grant all wearing the Musketeers navy and white. Since 2000, there have been few teams that have been as exciting or successful as Xavier. With over 5 trips to the Sweet Sixteen, and countless conference regular season and tournament championships in the last 2 decades, Xavier just keeps winning. Xavier Musketeers Rivals

Xavier vs. Cincinnati

Known as the Crosstown Shootout, this is one of the special rivalries in college basketball. Separated by only about 3 miles, this is among the closest rivalries in college sports. The Musketeers and Bearcats have met over 80 times since 1927. Although Cincinnati leads in overall wins, the rivalry has been constantly back and forth, with Xavier having the upper hand over the last 2 decades. Game days at the Crosstown Shootout are heated and competitive. This is without a doubt one of the best sporting events in the country.

Xavier vs. Butler

One of the growing rivalry games on Xavier’s schedule, Musketeers-Bulldogs has quickly becomes one of the most intense rivalries in the Big East. The two basketball crazed universities are separated by only about two hours, and have played each other over 45 times dating back to the 1930’s. The already passionate rivalry was taken to the next level when the schools became conference opponents in 2012. Look for this game to only continue to grow in excitement and tradition in the Big East over the coming years.

Xavier vs. Dayton

Dating back to 1920, this is one of the fiercest rivalries for both schools. The rivalry has been played over 150 times, with the Flyers currently leading the overall series. But the Musketeers have dominated the last 3 decades, especially when playing in Cincinnati, where Dayton has found it almost impossible to win. The winner of the game is awarded the Blackburn/McCaferty Trophy, which is named for head coaches from both universities. With Xavier leaving the A10 for the Big East, this rivalry is no longer a conference game.
