While the Arkansas Razorbacks have been one of the most winning college football programs in the country, racking up 682 wins, their bowl performances haven’t lived up to their regular season success. Arkansas was a founding member of the now defunct Southwest conference in 1915 but it wasn’t until 1933 the Razorbacks first played in a bowl game. The Razorbacks were involved in one of the most famous bowl games of all time when they earned a bid into the 1946 Cotton Bowl vs the Y.A. Tittle led LSU team. An ice storm hit the Dallas area before the game which created tough playing conditions and later gave the bowl game the nickname the “ice Bowl”. Arkansas was out gained in yards 271-54 but the Razorbacks stuffed LSU on the one yard line with the second to last play of the game and the watched as a bad snap ruined LSU’s game winning field goal chance. The game would end in a 0-0 tie. They’d have to wait 14 more years before they’d get their first bowl win, defeating William & Mary in the Dixie Bowl.
Arkansas was a mainstay in bowl games during the 1960’s playing in four Sugar Bowls and three Cottons Bowls. Under Lou Holtz the Razorbacks rolled over the #2 Oklahoma Sooners in the Orange Bowl, keeping the Sooners from a chance at being the National Champions. The Razorbacks had a resurgence onto the national stage in 2006. Heisman runner up Darren McFadden led the Razorbacks into the SEC championship game against Florida. Arkansas would go onto lose 38-28. Bobby Petrino took over the Razorbacks in 2008 and turned them into a national championship contender. They lost in the 2010 Sugar Bowl to Ohio State and won the 2011 Cotton Bowl over Kansas State.
