2017 Rice Season Preview
Oh boy, last season was one to forget for Rice. The defense, in a nutshell, didn’t work. They allowed an eyepopping 500 yards on the ground, which 999 times out of 1,000 will result in a goose-egg. As a Rice fan, you already know this, so let’s get to some constructive information. First up, linebacker Emmanuel Ellerbee is a talent, and will only get better. Believe it or not he garnered All-Conference USA accolades last year with 118 tackles. Safety Destri White is back for his senior season as is defensive end Brian Womac. Pride alone should elevate these dude’s games, even if just a little bit. Getting waxed for 500 on the ground will do that. But as with most teams, the offense will need to score more than the other team’s offense to win, and QB Jackson Tyner will be tasked with this goal. He’s a big boy with a big arm, and this is good news. But the accuracy needs to improve as do his receivers. Let’s see if the Owls can put it together to go bowling, the fans certainly deserve it. Rice Owls Football at Rice Stadium

Rice vs. Houston
Only 5 miles apart on Houston’s inner loop, the Owls and Cougars battle in one of the closest inner-city rivalries in college football. The two teams meet in the “Bayou Bucket Classic” for supremacy in the city of Houston, as well as for the right to take the “Bayou Bucket” back to their side of the city. The close proximity allows fans from both sides to travel in numbers, making game days loud and giving the rivalry a great atmosphere.
Rice vs. SMU
This matchup is between two of the smallest schools to field Division-1 FBS squads. The Owls and Mustangs have squared off over 85 times dating back to 1916. Both teams have seen extended eras of success in this series, with the Mustangs leading by a slim margin. The winner of the game has been awarded the “Mayor’s Cup” every year since 1998, bringing extra fire to one of the best rivalries in Texas.

2015 Rice Football Preview
Rice has been one of the hottest football programs in the country over the last three years. The Owls had another fantastic season last year, finishing just outside of the C-USA championship game. Outstanding Owls quarterback Driphus Jackson returns in 2015 for his senior season and will be surrounded by a talented group of Owls position players. Running back Jowon Davis comes in as one of the top players in C-USA, and receivers Dennis Parker and Zach Wright are both looking to have breakout seasons. With an experienced defense behind him, Jackson will look to lead Rice to their 2nd C-USA title in 3 years. In the way will be one of the toughest schedules in C-USA. Top games on the Rice Owls 2015 schedule are at Texas and Baylor, and in Houston against LA Tech, and Southern Miss.
2013 Rice Football Preview
It is hard to look at a 3-9 season with optimism and hope for the following year. But here is what the Jayhawks have going for them in 2014. One of those three wins in 2013 was a stomping of West Virginia, which gave the boys from Lawrence their first Big 12 victory since 2010. With that monkey off of their back, the Jayhawks can focus on improving. Head coach Charlie Weiss has now had 3 years to recruit and mold his Kansas players to fit into his one prolific offensive schemes. The Jayhawks continue to recruit solid JUCO talent which can step in and help the team win right away. One such player, running back De’Andre Mann should have a major impact on the Kansas offense in 2014. The Jayhawks schedule is full of big games, look for an early season game at Duke to be a chance for Kansas to make some noise. Other interesting matchups are a September 27th meeting with Texas, and a November 8th showdown with Iowa State.
2014 Kansas Football Preview
David Bailiff’s 6th season as Rice’s head football coach was one of the most successful seasons that the program has had in over a decade. The Owls won 10 games, and clinched their first conference title since 1994. Quarterback Taylor McHargue threw for over 2,200 yards and connected on 17 touchdown passes. He became the first quarterback in Rice’s history to lead the team to consecutive bowl games. The Rice Owls come into the 2014 season with someone not named McHargue at quarterback for the first time since 2010. Bailiff and company will turn the offensive reigns over to talented junior Driphus Jackson. Jackson will operate behind one of the most experienced offensive lines in C-USA and will have plenty of weapons at his disposal. Look for the Owls to be in contention for a 2nd straight Conference-USA title in 2014. Rice opens the season with two tough games, at Texas A&M, and at Notre Dame. Other exciting matchups on the Owls schedule are October 25th against North Texas and November 21st against UTEP.
2013 Rice Football Preview
Expectations may be as high as ever for the Rice Owls as they head into the 2013 season and head coach David Baliff’s 7th year as the head coach. Rice ended the season on a 5-game winning streak which included a bowl victory over Air Force. Even more exciting for Rice is they only lost a total of nine players from the 2012 roster. Baliff’s team gained a lot of experience last season and they will benefit greatly by that this upcoming year. Quarterback Taylor McHargue returns as the signal caller for his senior season, but sophomore Driphus Jackson gives Baliff another option after proving he can perform during his freshman season. Junior receiver Jordan Taylor is hoping to build off his breakout 2012 that ended with MVP honors in the Armed Forces Bowl and the defense should be improved after nearly the entire unit returning. Rice Stadium will celebrate its 62nd season with games against UTEP, Louisiana Tech, and Tulsa.
2011 Rice Football Preview
It’s been three years since Rice last made it to a bowl game, and the Owls have only managed to win six games over the last two seasons. However, with an impressive 17 starters returning, head coach David Bailiff may be able to lead his team back to the postseason.
Taylor McHargue will be back under center for Rice after his 2010 campaign was limited due to injury. He will definitely be helped by the fact that his main target, tight end Luke Wilson, will be back. Though he is able to lead the way, the strength of the Owl offense lies in its ability to run the ball. This year, the duty will be split between former Michigan running back Sam McGuffie and sophomore Jeremy Eddington.
As for the defense, the Owls will have to improve. They allowed an unacceptable 38.5 points per game last year, but with eight starters back they may be able to drastically reduce that number. Seniors tackles John Gioffre and Michael Smith will lead the way on the defensive line, and safeties Travis Bradshaw and Corey Frazier will look to shore up a secondary that was prone to giving up the big play last year.
2010 Rice Football Preview
True fans stand by their team - win or lose. While long-time fans of the Rice Owls football team have proven this motto of the faithful fanatic, they may have reason to believe in a winning season entering 2010.
Recent progress under coach David Bailiff brought the Owls their first bowl game victory since the 1949 season in the 2008 Texas Bowl. Though the team only went 2-6 in Conference USA West last year, there's reason to believe that a little experience and surviving a few tough losses could help right the ship. Quarterback Nick Fanuzzi will be returning after a season in which he threw 11 touchdown passes, and he'll be helped by goal line running back Charles Ross, who contributed 11 scores of his own last year.
The 2010 season opener, at home against Texas, will draw attention from the whole nation, as well as fans of the Owls. The two teams have developed a heated rivalry, despite the fact that the much larger Texas school strung 28 consecutive victories against Rice at one point.
On October 16th, Rice also plays their cross-town rivals, the Houston Cougars, at home for the traditional Bayou Bucket.
2009 Rice Football Preview
Things are looking very positive for the Rice Owls heading into the 2009 season. Head Coach David Bailiff enters his 3rd season for the Owls and hopes to improve upon their stunning 10-3 record from 2008. The Owls not only finished 7-1 in their conference, but they won the Texas Bowl. Bailiff has been recruiting lots of Lone Star State talent into the Rice program, which should make the Owls a team to contend with for years to come.
