From 1950-1961, Rice appeared in 3 Cotton Bowl Classics and a Sugar Bowl, coming out victorious twice. However, after a trip to the Bluebonnet Bowl in 1961, the Owls went over 45 years before they made another trip to a bowl game. Rice went over 55 years between bowl victories, a streak that was finally snapped in the 2008 Texas Bowl. The Owls have been to over 10 bowl games, winning more than 5. Rice has also become a consistent bowl participant in the last few seasons which has raised expectations by the fan base and missing a bowl game, is now considered a disappointing season.
Rice has had a few memorable bowl victories in their programs history, including their first bowl win in the 1938 Cotton Bowl Classic. The Owls defeated the Colorado Buffaloes 28-14. Another memorable bowl victory for Rice occurred in the 2008 Texas Bowl. The win marked the return of the Owls as a legitimate college football program. In that game, Rice defeated Western Michigan to earn their first bowl victory in 55 years.

In the 2014 Hawaii Bowl, the Rice Owls squared off against Fresno State Bulldogs as the Owls were trying to finish their season on a high note. The Owls were able to score two touchdowns within the first quarter and the defense took it from there by preventing the Bulldogs from scoring a touchdown throughout the whole game, a Hawaii Bowl record. The average ticket price was $41, a decrease from the $70 average price from the 2013 Hawaii Bowl.
