UAB Blazers Football at Legion Field Address: 400 Graymont Avenue West, Birmingham, Alabama, 35204
The University of Alabama Birmingham Blazers football team plays their home games at Legion field in Birmingham, Alabama. Legion Field has been home to the Blazers since 1991, and can seat over 70,000 fans. The stadium has a long history that dates back to 1927, earning it the nicknames the “Football Capital of the South,” and the “Old Gray Lady.” Legion Field hosted the Iron Bowl between Alabama and Auburn from 1948-1988. The Stadium has also been home to the Dixie Bowl, All-American Bowl, various professional football teams, and is currently the home for the BBVA Compass Bowl each year. When the Blazers moved into the stadium in 1991 it already had a long history and tradition. But UAB has put their own stamp on Legion Field and it becomes more and more the home of the Blazers each season. The size of the stadium places it among the largest in C-USA, and it is consistently one of the loudest venues in the conference.
UAB vs. Memphis
Known as the Battle for the Bones, this matchup began in the Blazers inaugural season in the FBS Division in 1997, and has been played almost every year since. In reference to the importance of barbeque to both Birmingham and Memphis, the winner of the game is awarded a 100 pound bronze rack of ribs trophy. The Blazers currently lead the series that has become known for smash-mouth football. If you are looking for one Blazers game to attend each year, this is one of the best.
UAB vs. Southern Miss
The schools first met on the gridiron in 2000, and have played every year since. This series has been unbelievably close with 4 of the first 5 games being decided by 5 points or less, and over half of the games won by less than 10 points. Southern Miss currently leads the series, but the Blazers have owned the last half-decade. Few series have erupted onto the college football landscape with the competitiveness of this one, and it has quickly become one of the gems of the C-USA schedule.
2011 UAB Football Preview
Although UAB had one of the most potent offenses in the country last year, the same could not be said for their defense. Its porous D led the Blazers to a 4-8 record, and stumbling throughout most of the year. With 15 returning starters, UAB will be looking to finally break through and earn a bowl bid for only the second time in school history.
The offense will be led by senior quarterback Bryan Ellis, who showed was more than a capable leader in 2010 by throwing for nearly 3,000 yards and 25 touchdowns. The offense is also loaded with a number of weapons including veteran receiver Patrick Hearn and running back Pat Shed, who averaged an impressive 177 yards per game last season.
The UAB defense will have to step it up this year if it would like to return to a bowl game. Luckily, the Blazers have a new defensive coordinator who knows how to win and a solid core of experienced players led by defensive tackle Elliot Henigan and cornerback T.J. Ballou. If the defense is up to the task, the Blazer may once again be in the conversation in Conference USA.
2010 UAB Football Preview
The University of Alabama at Birmingham Blazers football program is still comparatively young, but has been making positive strides throughout the last few seasons. When UAB fans turn out to home games at the off-campus Legion Field, they enter the third largest college football stadium in Alabama. As the Blazers continue to show that they can compete in Conference USA, almost 24,000 screaming fans show up to cheer their team on.
Last season, UAB went 4-4 in the conference and finished with a 5-7 overall record. While the record may seem mediocre, it's worth noting that the Blazers have routinely annoyed and beaten some of college football's top teams, since joining Conference USA in 1999. In 2000, the team beat LSU on the road, and then reached its first bowl game, the Hawaii Bowl, in 2004.
Entering the 2010 season, Coach Neil Callaway will need to find an explosive offensive weapon to replace their leading rusher and passer, Joe Webb, who was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings. Their top recruit, offensive center John Hix, should help give the Blazers' new offense a little breathing room by holding off opposing defenses.
The Blazers begin their season on September 4 against Florida Atlantic.
2009 UAB Football Preview
2009 marks the 3rd season that Neil Callaway will be the Head Coach of the UAB Blazers football team. If Callaway and UAB play up to their potential then the Blazers could be one of the surprise teams in Conference USA in 2009.
2008 UAB Football Preview
The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Blazers football program is one of the youngest and most exciting in all of college football. For a program that has existed for less than 20 years, to see them compete against some of the powerhouse football teams in the country, and win, is very exciting. Legion Field this season in Birmingham will be at full capacity as Blazers fans hope to see their team once again climb the ranks of the Conference USA and compete for another bowl game bid.
