2017 Miners Season Preview

UTEP needed just a couple more wins last year to go bowling. For Miner’s fans, going bowling matters, a lot, and with Rice and UTSA in their house this year, and away games that should result in wins at Army, North Texas, New Mexico State and UAB, there they have it. All wrapped up, no need to even play the games! Wrong of course, and playing starts with running back Quadraiz Wadley, a sophomore that if healthy can be an explosive force. In conjunction with Kevin Dove, a 250-pound load of a man, this is a nice tandem that should be solid in the backfield. Quarterback Ryan Metz will assume ball handing-off and throwing duties with wide receiver Eddie Sinegal being his principal target. For the Minders’ defense to keep points off the board the pass rush needs to improve. Last season they only recorded 14 sacks. If UTEP can’t get into the backfield, forget about a bowl appearance. Whether you are planning on cheering on UTEP at Sun Bowl Stadium or supporting the Miners on the road, TicketCity has some of the best deals for all 2017 UTEP Miners tickets, including home and away games.

UTEP Miners Rivals

UTEP vs. New Mexico State

In 1914, UTEP (then Texas College of the Mines), faced off against New Mexico State (then New Mexico A&M), in it’s first ever football game. A century later this rivalry has been played almost 100 times and is known as The Battle of I-10. The matchup is one of the few in the country to have two traveling trophies, the Silver Spade, and the Mayor’s Cup. The rivalry is currently as competitive as it has been in its history with the home team winning almost 60% of the time.

UTEP vs. UTSA

Satirically known as the “New” Battle of I-10, this is one of newest matchups in all of college football. Although UTSA has only had a football program since 2011, the proximity and similar size of these two schools makes this matchup a prime target to turn into great rivalry. Both schools are members of C-USA’s West Division, and they compete for recruits, students, fans, division, and conference championships. If there was one new C-USA matchup to keep an eye on in the next decade, this might be it.

2015 UTEP Football Preview

The UTEP Miners have been one of the most consistently talented teams in C-USA over the last 5 years. But UTEP comes into 2015 with a bit of uncertainty at many of their most crucial positions. Gone is star quarterback Jameill Showers who led the team with 16 total touchdowns a season ago. The Miners will turn to Mack Leftwich to lead the program and the talented sophomore looks up to the task. Expect last season’s rushing leader for the Miners Aaron Jones to be the focal point of what should be a deadly UTEP rushing attack. The young Miners team will not have long to adjust to their new roles, traveling to Arkansas and Texas Tech in the season’s first two games. Top games on the UTEP Miners 2015 football schedule are in El Paso against Incarnate Word, UTSA, and Rice.

2014 UTEP Football Preview

Sean Kugler’s first season as the head coach of the UTEP Miners football team was one of building for the future. The Miners faced a tough C-USA schedule and finished the season 2-10. UTEP looks to make huge strides in Kugler’s 2nd season in El Paso and there is much optimism coming into the season. Senior quarterback Jameill Showers returns and will have plenty of help from talented receivers Ian Hamilton and Jarrad Shaw. Look for a much improved defense in 2014 led by senior strong safety Jameel Erving and senior linebacker Anthony Puente. The UTEP Miners will play a number of interesting games, including two against Big 12 opponents in the non-conference when Texas Tech comes to El Paso on September 6th, and when the Miners travel to Manhattan to take on Kansas State on September 27th. Key games for the Miners in Conference USA will be November 1st against Southern Miss, November 15th against North Texas, and November 29th against Middle Tennessee.

2011 UTEP Football Preview

UTEP got off to a fast start last season, but managed to win just one game down the stretch and finished at 6-7. With just 11 starters returning from last year's squad, it may be difficult for the Miners to build on last year, but head coach Mike Price has the football acumen to do just that.

The offense suffered the brunt of the losses, and will be returning just two players who started in 2010. Perhaps the biggest hole that UTEP needs to fill is at quarterback, and they will attempt to do so with junior college transfer Nick Lamaison, who enters the season with high expectations. As for the skill positions, Joe Banyard is expected to lead the way at running back.

The defense appears to be a little better off in terms of experience, and returns nine starters. The Miners will likely have to rely on their defense, and will turn to a strong defensive led by Marcus Bagley and Germard Reed. The Miners also have a talented secondary highlighted by cornerback Travaun Nixon, who is among the best in Conference USA.

2010 UTEP Football Preview

The UTEP Miners football team has an outside shot at taking home the 2010 Conference USA West title, and fans are eager to have their preseason questions answered as the club prepares to make a run. In the past few seasons, the passionate play that the Miners show at times has dwindled toward the end of the year. In 2009, this tendency left the club with a 4-8 overall record.

As UTEP prepares for the 2010 campaign, head coach Mike Price will have to condition his athletes to play fierce football through the final game.

Senior quarterback Trevor Vittatoe, who was suspended during the Miners' spring games for breaking team rules, will be the difference maker this year. A positive attitude and better decision-making will help Vittatoe improve upon the 3,308 yards and 17 touchdowns he threw last season. In addition, running back Donald Buckram compiled a breakout season in '09, averaging 6.2 yards per carry and rushing for 18 scores. If the Miners are to seriously contend in the 2010 college football season, Buckram will need to prove that last year was no fluke.

The UTEP Miners begin their favorable 2010 schedule at home against Arkansas at Pine Bluff.

2009 UTEP Football Preview

Things look promising in El Paso for the UTEP Miners heading into the 2009 college football season. UTEP head coach Mike Price has his team playing good football these past few years and Miner fans are starting to fill up the Sun Bowl. Expect another successful season from Price and UTEP this year as they look to surprise some teams and make waves on the national scene.

2008 UTEP Football Preview

After a couple of tough seasons, the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) Miners football team will look to improve in the Conference USA this coming season. Head coach Mike Price is in El Paso to stay and will look to repeat the quick success he brought to UTEP in just his first season in 2004, when he led the Miners to an 8-4 record. UTEP had won only six games in the previous three seasons combined. The Miners haven’t yet to managed to build on that success, but keep an eye out for this upstart program in El Paso as they look to climb the Conference USA standings and vie for just their third bowl bid ever.
