Since the start of the 1991 season, East Carolina has been one of the more consistent teams in terms of participating in bowl season. The Pirates have made over 12 bowl games in that time and over 18 overall in program history. East Carolina has also won more than eight of those bowl games. With their recent track record of participating in bowl games, the expectations have risen with the fan base that missing out on a bowl game is considered a disappointing season for the Pirates.
East Carolina has participated in a few memorable bowl games including their big win over rival NC State in the 1992 Peach Bowl. Behind future NFL quarterback Jeff Blake, the Pirates defeated the Wolfpack to finish the season with a program best 11-1 record and ranked in the top 10 nationally. Another memorable bowl victory occurred in the 2013 Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl game against the Ohio Bobcats. The win gave the Pirates 10 victories on the season and the second time in program history finishing with double digit wins.

On December 23, 2013, East Carolina squared off against the Ohio Bobcats in the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl as East Carolina was trying to finish the season with nine victories. The Pirates defeated the Bobcats, 37-20 to earn East Carolina its first bowl win since 2007.
