2017 Cougars Season Preview

We'll cut to it, Houston needs to win the American Athletic title this year. Yes, there's a new head coach and some key cogs in the Cougar's proverbial wheel are missing. But Houston missed on capturing the division last year and their non-conference schedule includes UTSA, Rice, Arizona and Texas Tech. Houston should be able to win 3, if not all of those. Now, in conference they will need to travel to South Florida, Temple and Tulsa. This will be rough, but they do have Navy at home with a key game being Memphis on October 19th. If this Cougars squad is going to move the ball effectively the offensive line needs to remain stout, stacked and shifty to get that running game going. Houston was weak in key games last year, struggling to consistently notch 100-yard rushing games. Offensive coach Brian Johnson was a stud QB at Utah and will now have the offensive reigns. Concentrate on the blocking, Coach Johnson, that’s where your bread and butter lies in 2017. Whether you are planning on cheering on Houston at TDECU Stadium or supporting the Cougars on the road, TicketCity has some of the best deals for all 2017 Houston Cougars tickets, including home and away games.

The rivalry dates back to 1971, and continued as both schools were conference rivals in both the SWC and C-USA. Houston Cougars Preview History

2016 Houston Football Preview

The Houston Cougars had one of the school’s best football seasons with 13 wins and 1 loss in 2016, this included an American Athletic Conference Championship title plus a win in the New Year’s Peach bowl against Florida State. Coming into 2016, second-year head coach Tom Herman is aiming for an even better season with the Cougars. Greg Ward Jr. will be returning in 2016 as starting quarterback after his breakout season when he threw for more than 2,000 yards and rushed for 1,000 yards. After losing wide receiver Demarcus Ayers to the NFL Draft, Chance Allen will need to step up to fill the hole left by the wide receiver. The Houston defense has 5 starters returning, but the question will be filling three important positions in the secondary. Important games in the 2016 Houston Cougars' schedule will be the season opener against the Oklahoma Sooners as well as in the second to last game against Louisville. Wins for these games will propel Houston closer to the College Football Playoff in 2016.

2015 Houston Football Preview

The Houston Cougars football program has been trending upward for the last decade, and 2015 marks a new era for the Cougars. Tom Herman takes over as the 13th Head Coach of the Houston Cougars, bringing with him an offensive system that won the National Championship a season ago. Orchestrating Herman’s famed offense will be junior quarterback Greg Ward who is one of the top returning quarterbacks in the AAC. The Cougars will be tested early, traveling to Louisville to take on the Cardinals in week 2. Top home games on the Houston Cougars 2015 football schedule are against SMU, Vanderbilt, Cincinnati, and Memphis.

2014 Houston Football Preview

Tony Levine’s 2nd full season as head coach of the Houston Cougars football team saw the Cougars build off of a tough 2012 season and return to bowl eligibility. Of Houston’s 5 losses on the season, 4 were by 7 points or less proving that Houston was just a few plays away from being in the running for an AAC championship. Houston looks to turn those close losses into victories in 2014 and will rally behind 2nd year starting quarterback John O’Korn. The sophomore threw for over 3,000 yards in his freshman season and will utilize dangerous offensive weapons Daniel Spencer and Deontay Greenberry. Look for the Cougars to continue to be one of the top offenses in the country as they try to take the next step towards an AAC title. Key games for the Cougars will be October 2nd against UCF, November 28th at SMU, and December 6th at Cincinnati.

2011 Houston Football Preview

Houston had a rough go in 2010. After a promising start, the Cougars lost starting quarterback Case Keenum for the year and stumbled to a 5-7 finish. However, Keenum is back and healthy this season, and head coach Kevin Sumlin looks to bring Houston back into the Top-25 once more.

The importance of having Keenum under center cannot be understated. He was a legitimate Heisman Trophy candidate in 2009, and has one of the best arms in the country. And with Houston's pass-happy offensive scheme, he's a perfect fit. He will be helped a great deal by standout wide receiver Patrick Edwards, who is returning after a 1,000 yard campaign last season.

As for the defense, while it may not have the explosive potential as the offense, it has a solid core to build around. Specifically, the Cougars will return their starting three linebackers from a year ago to provide some much needed leadership. With a toned down schedule and a wealth of experience, there's no reason why Houston can't make its way back to the post season.

2010 Houston Football Preview

Given last year's success and the steadiness of the program, fans of Houston Cougars football have got to be excited about the 2010 season. Still early in his tenure, head coach Kevin Sumlin has led his team to back-to-back appearances in the Armed Forces Bowl and a top finish in Conference USA West in 2009. The team went 10-4 overall, and let opponents know that they would be a team to fear in 2010.

This season, nearly every starter returns for the Cougars, making them a contender to claim the school's 11th conference championship. Much to the delight of Cougars fans, and the dismay of opposing defensive coordinators, Houston's quarterback Case Keenum will return for another year of play. Last season, the redshirt junior became just the second Division I quarterback to gain more than 5,000 passing yards in consecutive seasons. In total, Keenum threw for an astounding 5,671 yards and 44 touchdowns in 2009. He'll be flanked by running back Charles Sims and top receiver James Cleveland.

With a star-studded cast of returning players, the Cougars have a good chance for ongoing success when they start the 2010 season on September 4.

2009 Houston Football Preview

The University of Houston Cougars should have an exciting football season in 2009. Head Coach Kevin Sumlin is starting his 3rd year at the helm of the Cougars, so his talented offense should really start to take flight. Houston will need that offense to soar in 2009 because the team faces a challenging schedule, highlighted by non-conference games against Mississippi State, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech.

2008 Houston Football Preview

The Houston Cougars football program is one of the most exciting to watch this season as they say goodbye to their successful coach Art Briles, who has left to take the head coaching job at Baylor, and they settle in under the leadership of former Oklahoma Sooners Offensive Coordinator Kevin Sumlin. The Cougars have shown themselves to be a real contender each year for a Conference-USA West division title and conference title, and the team will also look for a bowl bid in 2008. Robertson Stadium will hold capacity crowds this coming season, as the Houston Cougars start the next era in their already rich football history.
