This is the matchup that invented trophy games for college football. Though the teams had played since the late 1800s, the rivalry really came into its own in 1903 when a paranoid Michigan team decided it needed access to uncontaminated water and bought a little brown water jug. After the Gophers forced an unexpected tie with the Wolverines in a downpour, Michigan forgot the jug and headed to the locker room. Minnesota claimed the jug as it's own and invited Michigan to try and earn it back the next time they played. The little brown jug has been changing hands ever since.
