Dating back to 1947, SDSU-BYU is one of the oldest series for the Aztecs. The matchup came to prominence in the 1970’s when both schools were members of the WAC. The series had several key moments, and was often pivotal in deciding the WAC champion and subsequently which team received a bid to the Holiday Bowl. The rivalry continued when both schools joined the MWC after the 1998 season. With the Cougars leaving the MWC to become an FBS Independent, the future of the rivalry has been put in question.
