North Carolina State Wolfpack Football Season Preview History

2011 North Carolina State Football Preview:
North Carolina State was one of the biggest surprises in the ACC last season, enjoying a solid 5-3 conference record and a bowl victory. Head coach Tom O'Brien looks to built on his first winning season at the helm of the Wolfpack, and he certainly has the tools to do so.

The biggest question facing North Carolina State this year is how they will deal with the loss of quarterback Russell Wilson, who transferred to Wisconsin. He will be replaced by Mike Glennon, who reportedly has all the skills necessary to lead the Wolfpack. He will also be surrounded by a bevy of talented players, including running back Mustafa Greene, who is also a reliable receiver.

The defense was solid last year, and with eight returning starters there's no reason why it can't be just as good in 2011. Perhaps the most crucial piece of the defense that's coming back is middle linebacker Audie Cole, who was the team's leading tackler in 2010. Strong safety Earl Wolff will anchor a strong secondary that will likely be among the best in the ACC.

2010 North Carolina State Football Preview:
College football in the ACC is a constant struggle for power, and teams are always rising and falling. The North Carolina State Wolfpack hopes to be back on the rise in 2010 after finishing just 5-7 last year and tallying only two wins in the conference. Despite the mediocre season, NC State has shown that it can be a powerhouse, winning seven ACC championships throughout the years, and competing in 23 bowl games, most recently in the 2008 PapaJohns.com bowl against Rutgers.

The Wolfpack's primary question entering the new season is at the quarterback position. After being selected by the Colorado Rockies in the fourth round of the MLB draft, starting quarterback Russell Wilson said that he would return to North Carolina for his junior year - but his future is tentative at the least. Wilson's departure would be a huge loss for the Wolfpack; - last season he threw for a glittering 3,027 yards and 31 touchdowns. In his stead, Mike Glennon, who practiced with the first-team while Wilson played baseball this spring, would take the team's snaps.

But perhaps the best player on the roster is linebacker Nate Irving, whose absence last season left NC State's defense in shambles. A few more conference victories would get the team moving in the right direction, especially if they can topple rivals North Carolina and Wake Forest.
