2018 Oklahoma Sooners Season Preview

You won’t read it anywhere, and probably not get even a snippet of a sound bite, but the game circled (figuratively, not literally) on every member of Sooner nation is September 9th at Ohio State. Winning the Big 12 is nice, sure, but unless you are in the final four College Football Playoff, for the Oklahoma Sooners, nothing really matters. Bob Stoops is out (gasp), and the reigns have been turned over to Lincoln Riley for OU’s 2017 season. Quarterback Baker Mayfield will be a leading Heisman candidate, and Rodney Anderson at running back will be tasked with filling some enormous shoes in Samaje Perine and Joe Mixon who are now at the next level. The Sooners’ secondary is strong this year for the Sooner D, and if this team is going to compete for a Top 3 finish they will need a more robust pass rush. DE/LB Ogbonnia Okoronkwo must come in strong alongside linebacker Emmanuel Beal. If this occurs the Oklahoma Sooners, Bob Stoops will be pleased, watching from afar. Whether you are planning on cheering on the Oklahoma at OU Memorial Stadium or supporting the Sooners on the road, TicketCity has some of the best deals for all 2017 Oklahoma Sooners tickets, including home and away games.

Oklahoma Sooners Rivals

One of the biggest games in all of college football, The Red River Showdown is played in Dallas at the Cotton Bowl between two of the most storied programs in history. The Longhorn and Sooner faithful are split right down the middle of the stadium as they are surrounded by the State Fair of Texas on all sides of the stadium. It’s a can’t-miss for fans of either team and it’s the most unique setting for a football game in the country.

The Bedlam Series is one that is heavily won by the Sooners, but the recent emergence of Oklahoma State on a national level could change that in the future. The distance between Stillwater and Normal is small, on opposite sides of Oklahoma City, but the culture seems to be miles apart. Oklahoma has winning streaks of 15 and 19 and a more recent one of 8 straight from 2003-2010.

Although the rivalry between the Oklahoma Sooners and West Virginia Mountaineers is young, it has already seen some great moments. The two teams first played in 1958, but the rivalry was born in 2008 when the Sooners and Mountaineers met in the Fiesta Bowl. West Virginia blew out the Sooners, building animosity between the two programs. In 2012, the Mountaineers joined the Big 12, making this rivalry and annual series. Since then, the games between Ou and West Virginia have been incredibly tight and full of fantastic moments.

Oklahoma Sooners Football Preview History

2016 Oklahoma Football Preview

The Oklahoma Sooners had a successful 2015 regular season ending with an 8-1 conference play record and winning the Big 12 Championship Conference for the ninth time. The Sooners ended a 11-2 season, losing to the Clemson Tigers in the Semifinal CFP Orange Bowl Game with a final score of 17-37. Oklahoma Head Coach Bob Stoops will be utilizing his strong offensive roster in 2016. With one of the best quarterbacks in the country, Baker Mayfield, and running back Samaje Perine, who has shown impressive durability and consistency, Oklahoma will be ready to attack their opponents defense. The key for the Sooners in 2016 will be filling the team’s linebacker hole, made by Dominique Alexander when leaving for the NFL draft, to strengthen their defense. The 2016 schedule reveals two consecutive road games between TCU and rivals the Texas Longhorns, this will be the toughest game stretch for the Sooners this season to defend their Big 12 Championship.

2015 Oklahoma Football Preview

The Oklahoma Sooners entered the 2014 season brimming with confidence after the apparent emergence of quarterback Trevor Knight in the 2nd half of 2013. But the Sooners struggled in close games, losing to Tennessee, Kansas State, and Oklahoma State by a combined 8 points, leaving a sour note on what could have been a decent season for Ou. The 2015 Oklahoma Sooners will look to return to prominence in the Big 12, and will likely turn to transfer quarterback Baker Mayfield to take over behind center. Mayfield will have plenty of help in the backfield with Samaje Perine, and Alex Ross combining to be one of the best running back duo in the Big 12. The key for Oklahoma in 2015 will be taking care of the ball, if Mayfield and company can hold on to the ball, they could challenge Baylor and TCU for the Big 12 crown. Top games on the Oklahoma Sooners 2015 schedule include on the road against a revamped Tennessee squad, at the Cotton Bowl against Texas, and at home against TCU.

2014 Oklahoma Football Preview

The Sooners finished the season with a shocking beat down of the Alabama Crimson Tide in the Sugar Bowl to cap off another great year of OU football. Oklahoma beat Notre Dame and in-state rival Oklahoma State as well, but did get dealt a big blow when they were shocked by the Longhorns in Dallas. Bob Stoops has retooled his team and the Sooners are once again in the mix for the National Championship in 2014. The Sooners defense is chalk full of talent and guys that can change the course of the game in a single play. Geneo Grissom, Eric Sriker and Charles Tapper are all going to give opposing offenses nightmares the very pass-happy Big 12. Oklahoma will kick off the season at home against Louisiana Tech before heading out to play down the road in Tulsa. Other big games at Gaylord Memorial includes vs. Tennessee on Sept. 13, vs. Baylor on Nov. 8, and vs. Oklahoma State on Dec. 6. The big Red River Rivalry contest against Texas is on Oct. 11 this year. If Oklahoma can make it through the Texas and Baylor games unscathed, they could very well see themselves in the first ever College Football Playoff come January.

2011 Oklahoma Football Preview

Head Coach Bob Stoops has adequately followed the footsteps in Norman of Barry Switzer and Bud Wilkinson, only two of the most successful collegiate coaches in the history of college football. With four National Championship appearances over the past decade (and one win), 2011 looks to be another strong season, with 22 players returning who have started for OU at some time.

The most important returning Sooner is junior quarterback Landry Jones, who already holds the school record for most completions overall, and looks to break more records this season. He will look to break them with senior wide receiver Ryan Broyles, who also has a few sooner records under his belt. While these two are singing their swan songs to Norman before hitting the NFL market, the youth movement is underfoot, especially in the backfield. True freshman Brandon Williams and sophomore Brennan Clay are tailback phenoms, and will look to split the workload in a high-octane offense.

Defensively, the Sooners are even more stacked, with 13 of those 22 returning players who have starting experience on this side of the ball. After losing All-Big 12 cornerback Jamell Fleming due to academic issues, however, the secondary is getting made-up on the fly. Junior Demontre Hurst is the ensconced starter, but the secondary starting spot is up for grabs, but most likely to be snatched by sophomore Gabe Lynn.  Up front, players like juniors Stacy McGee and juniors Stacy McGee and Casey Walker will look to clamp down on the Big-12 offenses, along with senior linebacker Travis Lewis and sophomore Tom Wort backing them up.

2010 Oklahoma Football Preview

Oklahoma was thrust into turmoil last season when the Sooners' Heisman Trophy winning quarterback, Sam Bradford, went down in the first game of the season and it was up to true freshman Landry Jones to right the ship. Jones did an admirable job but, despite a Sun Bowl win, Oklahoma finished a disappointing 8-5.

The amount of experience Jones accumulated last year may have paid dividends heading into the season. Bradford bolted for the NFL and the offensive success rests largely on Jones' arm. If he can maintain the number of touchdowns he threw in 2009 (26), while cutting down on interceptions (14), he should avoid a sophomore slump.

Jones also has the advantage of having a talented running back to help carry the load in senior DeMarco Murray. The speedy back has scored 45 touchdowns in his three years in Norman. Junior Ryan Broyles provides an explosive target at wide receiver as well.

The Sooner defense was one of the best in the nation last year, and although it lost outstanding tackle Gerald McCoy to the NFL and five others to graduation, they have a wealth of talent to fill all the holes.

Depending on how Oklahoma survives early tests from Florida State and Cincinnati, fans can expect the Sooners to be back on top of the Big 12 South in 2010.

2009 Oklahoma Football Preview

The 2009 Oklahoma Sooners received some of the best news of the year before even playing their first game. That is because their Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Sam Bradford announced he was returning to OU for another season. Behind Bradford and stud running back DeMarco Murray, the Oklahoma offense should pick up right where it left off in 2008. So the key to success in 2009 for OU will be Head Coach Bob Stoops once again working his magic on defense. If Stoops can get the Sooners defense playing lights out, then OU could roll through the tough Big 12 to earn a birth in Pasadena.

2008 Oklahoma Football Preview

The Oklahoma Sooners are returning in 2008 fresh off of a Big 12 Conference championship. Head Coach Bob Stoops has been pushing all the right buttons in Oklahoma, molding a top-notch team since he signed in 1999. His Sooners have a record of 97-22 over the last ten years, besting every Football Bowl Subdivision school. The Sooners are looking strong heading into the 2008 season, and are aimed to win another Big 12 Conference championship if they play their cards right.

Most notably, the Sooners sport the best offensive line in the country this season, meaning that they are going to get the ball downfield. Sam Bradford, Oklahoma's returning quarterback, is said to be the top signal caller in the country, and again that means the boys from Oklahoma are going to get the ball moving. Although the team plays a tough schedule this year, Bradford and the boys will step up the play, and OU's defense should surprise many to clench those tough games. Get out and see this star team in action!
