Williams-Brice Stadium Experience
The Gamecocks and Tigers come together every year to decide South Carolina supremacy, and whether it’s in Columbia or Clemson it’s always a game to remember. This is a rivalry that came even before football, even going back as far as 19th century politics. The Palmetto Bowl is the biggest game of football in the state and it’s one of the best college football experiences in the country.
While Georgia has a significant lead in the all-time series, the Gamecocks have had the upper hand recently in this inter-state battle. With recruiting battles heating up between the two schools and SC coach Steve Spurrier saying that the Bulldogs were their biggest conference rival, this matchup will get more heated every year.

Despite the vacancy in the National Title department, fans support the garnet and black relentlessly. The fighting gamecocks have seen their share of bowl game appearances and have amassed about a half dozen wins in those appearances. They have seen some conference success with an ACC Conference Title and more recently division title in 2010 in the SEC East.
2016 South Carolina Football Preview
The 2016 South Carolina Gamecocks’ schedule is set and the team is ready to begin a fresh start with first-year coach, Will Muschamp. In 2015, South Carolina endured a disappointing season finishing 3-9 overall and 1-7 against SEC opponents, while ending seventh in their division. The South Carolina Gamecocks will be coming into the 2016 season as the underdogs and fans will be anxiously waiting to see how Muschamp will be able to fill in the gaps on both sides of the ball. There are some exciting prospects coming from the freshman class: Wide Receiver Bryan Edwards who has already made a statement during the spring game, catching more passes than any other player on the team last season, and Quarterback Brandon McIlwain who has already dominated the talent on the 2016 roster for starting quarterback. It will be important for South Carolina to win against East Carolina in the third week to show that they have potential as a young team. 2015 South Carolina Football Preview
The South Carolina Gamecocks came into the 2014 season riding a ton of expectations, and a top 10 ranking. That quickly ended with a dismantling at the hands of the Texas A&M aggies. South Carolina was able to salvage their season by taking down SEC East rivals Georgia and Florida, but it was clear, the Gamecocks were playing for 2015. South Carolina will turn to sophomore Mitch Connor to take over what has become a deadly offensive attack in Columbia. He will have plenty of weapons to dish the ball to, including outstanding running back Brandon Wilds. South Carolina’s defense will rely heavily on a veteran defensive line in 2015, with Gerald Dixon and Phillip Dukes combining to be one of the best inside rushers in the SEC East. Once again the SEC East is a wide open division in 2015, with South Carolina sitting as one of the favorites. Keys for the Gamecocks to bring home an SEC East crown will be games at Tennessee, Missouri, and Georgia. As always, South Carolina will finish the season against in state rival Clemson.
2014 South Carolina Football Preview
It has never been a more exciting time to be a South Carolina Gamecocks fan. Coming off of a 3rd straight 11 win season, South Carolina is knocking at the door of the SEC title game. Despite all of this excitement, there are major uncertainties coming into the 2014 season. The Gamecocks defense will have to replace players like Jadeveon Clowney, Victor Hampton, Jimmy Legree, Kelcy Quarles, and Chaz Sutton. The offensive side of the ball will have to replace plenty of talent as well with quarterback Connor Shaw and receiver Bruce Ellington moving on to the NFL. South Carolina fans will know early which direction the season will take, with the opening game of the season coming against the red hot Texas A&M Aggies. USC will have little time to recover from that game with a battle against SEC East rival Georgia in week 3. If the Cocks can make it to week 4 unscathed, look for them to be a real contender for the SEC East title.
2013 South Carolina Football Preview
With arguably the best college football player in the country in junior defensive end Jadeveon Clowney and back-to-back seasons with 11 victories, expectations have never been higher in Columbia, South Carolina. Under the leadership of Steve Spurrier, the South Carolina Gamecocks have positioned themselves in the difficult SEC. When discussing the Gamecocks, the conversation begins and ends with Clowney. The All-American set the school single-season record for sacks in 2012 with 13. However, the key for South Carolina will be the play of senior quarterback Connor Shaw. Inconsistent at times, Shaw did manage to throw for over 1,900 yards and finish with 17 touchdowns in 2012. Shaw owns a 17-3 record as the starter for South Carolina and an impressive 10-0 record at home. The home record will be important as the Gamecocks host North Carolina, Vanderbilt, Florida, and Clemson this season.
2011 South Carolina Football Preview
It’s a new day for the Gamecocks and the Ol’ Ball Coach Steve Spurrier. They surprised most of college football in 2010 by making a run for the SEC Championship, thanks mostly to the recruiting class brought in over the past couple of years. They will have the pleasure of suiting up last year’s number one recruit in all the land, defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, who they hope will give them a push into the BCS picture.
A lot of that will have to do with the condition of quarterback Stephen Garcia. He threw for 3,059 yards and 20 TDs, along with six rushing scores, making him a fine signal caller. However, for the Gamecocks to succeed, they will need him to cut back on the turnovers and get his head on straight (he’s been suspended from the team for the fifth time this offseason). After him, the offense is great, led by super sophomore running back Marcus Lattimore and junior All-American candidate wide out Alshon Jeffery.
Up front defensively, South Carolina is set for a while, even after the loss of Cliff Matthews to the NFL. Junior Devin Taylor was All-SEC first team in 2010, and senior Melvin Ingram led the team in sacks. However, it’s going to be hard to sit Clowney, so depending on the creativity the coaches will use deploying a 6’6” young monster will be key on their way up the ranks.
2010 South Carolina Football Preview
South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier has been at the school for five years and while his 35-28 record is respectable, he has not brought the Gamecocks to the level of success that fans were expecting when he started. After a tepid 7-6 result that ended in a disappointing loss to Connecticut in the PapaJohns.com Bowl, Spurrier may be in the hot seat.
The Gamecock offense struggled down the stretch last year, scoring more than 20 points just once in the team's final seven games. Luckily for Gamecock fans, junior Stephen Garcia is among the best quarterbacks in the SEC, but he will need improved offensive line play to increase the offense's output from 2009. Garcia's main target will be sophomore Alshon Jeffery, who is the only returning starter in the receiving corps.
Although the South Carolina offense needs work, the defense should be good, as the squad that ranked 15th in the nation in total defense last year. Senior defensive end Cliff Matthews should be the most dynamic player on defense, and junior linebacker Shaq Wilson should provide Matthews with some added support.
South Carolina will most likely not drop off from last year's team, and a bowl berth is expected. However, unless Garcia and the offensive line can gel, the Gamecocks will probably float around the .500 mark.
2009 South Carolina Football Preview
2009 could be a magical season for the South Carolina Gamecocks. If the Gamecocks play up to their potential they could make some major waves in the SEC. What we do know about South Carolina heading into the season is that they play in one of the toughest conferences in college football. We also know that Head Coach Steve Spurrier is one of the best offensive minds in all of college football. And we know that South Carolina has some of the most loyal and passionate fans in all of football. The South Carolina Gamecocks football team is an exciting one to watch this season as legendary coach Steve Spurrier tries to lead the team to only its second conference title ever. Spurrier has posted some strong records since taking the helm, but is likely disappointed by the .500 season the Gamecocks had in 2007.
