The Appalachian State University Mountaineers football team is one of the most accomplished in college football over the past 50 years. The Mountaineers have won more than 60% of their games while competing against some of the best football teams in the Southeast. The success has led to increased exposure, and has helped Appalachian State make the move into the highest levels of college football .
ASU currently plays in the Sun Belt Conference against some of the toughest competition in the country. Some of the notable players for the Mountaineers over the years include Dexter Coakley, Leroy Howell, Steve Wilkes, Dexter Jackson, Armanti Edwards, D.J. Smith, and Demetrius McCray. To accompany all of this success on the field is one of the most passionate and proud fan bases in the country, with the Mountaineers Black and Gold dominating the color schemes of Boone and the surrounding areas. Gamedays at Kidd Brewer stadium are loud and exciting as fans arrive early to take part in the tailgating at Mountaineer Village. Fans attending games should learn all of the words to “Hi Hi Yikas,” and look for Yusef the mascot along the sidelines.
