2017 Texas Kickoff Classic Preview

The 2016 AdvoCare Texas Kickoff game will pit the Oklahoma Sooners against the Houston Cougars on September 3, 2016. The nonconference matchup between Big 12 team Oklahoma and AAC team Houston will be a high-intensity game. The Texas Kickoff Classic college football game is played annually at NRG Stadium, located in Houston, Texas. NRG Stadium is the home of the Houston Texans of the NFL and is one of the premier venues in the country. Known formerly as Relient Stadium, the stadium has a seating capacity of over 71,000 fans and was opened in 2002. NRG Stadium was one of the first football stadiums in the country to have a retractable roof. The 2nd ever AdvoCare Texas Kickoff Classic was one of the best games of the 2014 college football season. Led by standout running back Melvin Gordon, the Wisconsin Badgers jumped out to a 24-7 lead over the LSU Tigers. But LSU quarterback Anthony Jennings led the Tigers on a furious comback, finishing the game with over 230 yards through the air and 2 touchdowns. The Tigers scored the games final 21 points, while shutting the Badgers out in the final quarter in a half.

August 31, 2013 - Oklahoma State Cowboys 21, Mississippi State Bulldogs 3

The innagural AdvoCare Texas Kickoff pitted the Oklahoma State Cowboys of the Big 12 against the Mississippi State Bulldogs of the SEC. The story of the game was the Cowboys defense. OSU held the Bulldogs to less than 350 yards of total offense and forced Mississippi State into 2 turnovers, all while keeping them out of the endzone. Oklahoma State quarterback J.W. Walsh led the game with 125 yards rushing while the Cowboys put up over 285 yards on the ground. Bulldogs quarterback Tyler Russell would be injured in the game making way for future Bulldogs star Dak Prescott to take over at the quarterback position.
