School OverviewPurdue Fight Song: "Hail Purdue", 1913
Purdue Mascot: Purdue Pete, introduced 1940
"Boilermakers" Explained: When the football team defeated Wabash College rather soundly in 1891, the local papers noted that Wasbash was defeated by the "Burly Boiler Makers from Purdue," an ode to the school's engineering roots.

Located in Western Indiana, Purdue University has consistently produced some of the finest athletes in the country. Located in Big Ten country, Purdue’s specialty is football quarterbacks, so much so that it’s widely called the “Cradle of Quarterbacks” for its propensity to send signal-callers to the NFL. Besides current NFL quarterbacks Drew Brees, Kyle Orton and and Curtis Painter, past memorable Purdue graduates include Len Dawson, Bob Griese and Jim Everett.

More recently, the men’s and women’s basketball squads have become the most successful squads on campus. The men’s team has had two National Player of the Year winners on its squad—John Wooden and Glenn Robinson—and numerous All-American selections. Under current head coach Matt Painter’s tenure, starting in 2006, the Boilermakers have made five straight NCAA Tournaments, reaching the Sweet Sixteen twice, in 2009 and 2010.

The women Boilermakers have been even more successful. With even more accolades in its short history (women’s basketball was made a varsity sport in 1982), they’ve had one National Player of the Year (Stephanie White in 1999) and made the NCAA Tournament 16 of the past 17 years, winning it all in 1999.
