Located in the heart of Ohio, Columbus may often get overlooked in terms of appealing Midwest cities, but it shouldn't. The capital of The Buckeye State, this locale has plenty to offer in terms of
culture, sports and entertainment and will certainly put a smile on the face of anybody who's lucky enough to visit.
Though Columbus has a number of professional and minor league sports teams, none can compare in terms of loyal fans to Ohio State. The biggest campus in the country, the Buckeyes have one of the most storied football programs in all of college sports, thanks in no small part to their iconic stadium.
Affectionately referred to as The Shoe for its unique horseshoe design, Ohio Stadium is one of the largest venues in the country. Opened in 1922, the stadium seats more than 102,000 people on any given Saturday afternoon, and has even topped the 106,000 spectator mark. Attending a football game at Ohio Stadium is one of the best experiences in all of sports and something you have to do if you're an avid college football fan.
Ohio State men's basketball has risen in the ranks of popular teams in recent years as well. The Buckeyes, which made it to a pair of Final Fours during the 2000s, play at Value City Arena in downtown Columbus. The venue attracts a great deal of patronage the whole year, and also hosts a slew of concerts including shows from Usher, Taylor Swift and Nickelback in the last few years.
Columbus is also home the Blue Jackets of the NHL. Since they joined the league in 2000, the Blue Jackets have enjoyed a loyal following of fans and play their home games in the friendly confines of the Nationwide Arena. One of the more modern hockey venues in the country, the 18,000-seat arena offers spectators a great view from any seat in the house.
There is much more to Columbus than just Ohio State and hockey, however. The city is home to the Ohio State Fair, which is among the largest such events in the country, and has been held every year since. Though it has often changed locations, it has been held in Columbus most recently and in years past has attracted upwards of 800,000 visitors. Whether you've taken a stroll through the beautiful OSU campus or attended the state fair, you should make a point to take in a show at one of Columbus' many venues. The Nationwide Arena is one of the biggest places to catch a concert, but if you're looking for a more intimate seating, the Lincoln Theater is the way to go.
