The Nationwide Arena, established in 2000, is just one piece of a larger entertainment district being built in the downtown of Columbus, Ohio. It is the home of the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets and can hold more than 18,000 people. The arena is one of the most cutting-edge facilities in the country, featuring a classic glass and brick facade and a 70-foot, glass-enclosed atrium that greets attendees as they walk in. The concourses are delightfully spacious, and event attendees can see the action on the ice when visiting the amenities on the lower concourse. With the elegant brick-paved streets, shops, restaurants and bars, there's a little something for everyone in the vicinity of Nationwide Arena.

The venue was built to accommodate the Columbus Blue Jackets, who entered the NHL as an expansion team in 2000. This was the first professional sports team to ever call the Ohio capital home. The franchise was named after the citizens of Ohio who fought in the Civil War, and many of the Union "blue jackets" were made in Columbus for the army. Following the formula of most expansion teams, the Blue Jackets got off to a slow start, but the early returns were encouraging.

In 2009, Columbus residents got their first taste of playoff hockey when the Blue Jackets got into the postseason with a record of 41-31-10. Unfortunately, the Blue Jackets would be pitted against the perennial powerhouse Detroit Red Wings and were swept in four games. However, with a roster that features such young stars as Antoine Vermette, Rick Nash, Kristian Huselius and Steve Mason, the Blue Jackets have more than enough firepower to make some noise in the Stanley Cup playoffs in the near future.

The Nationwide Arena also brought a much-neeed boost to the entertainment potential of downtown Columbus, and it has become a preferred concert venue since its inception. The venue opened its doors in 2000 with the sold-out Soul to Soul tour featuring Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, but it also went on to host blockbuster tours like John Mayer's Battle Studies Tour, Michael Bublé's Call Me Irresponsible tour and Foo Fighters' Wasting Light tour.

Between receiving their very own sports franchise, a booming entertainment district and world-class live performances, Columbus citizens and visitors alike have plenty to be excited about in the coming years.
