Formed in 1975, Air Supply is the brainchild of two men—Brit Graham Russell and Aussie Russell Hitchcock—hatched when the two met while working on a production of Jesus Christ Superstar down under. While the band enjoyed success in Australia (they opened for Rod Stewart abroad), it wasn’t until hit-maker Clive Davis noticed the duo’s track “Lost in Love” that they began to break open.
Davis, under his Arista label, remixed “Lost in Love” and released it internationally. The song would spark a career that saw multiple top-20 hits and two number-one tracks, “The One That You Love” and "Making Love out of Nothing at All". They dominated the airwaves in the early- to mid-80s, but have continued to put out records after their brief band hiatus in 1988.
However, they band’s popularity continues today, and they can be heard on the soundtracks to movies and even the streets of Havana, Cuba. The group was one of the first (and only) foreign groups asked and allowed to play the island, and the first of their two shows drew 175,000 people. Unfortunately, the second day brought Hurricane Dennis, and the cancellation of said show.
