Steven Patrick Morrissey spent a lot of his youth as a fan of popular music. Still in his teens, he ran the UK version of the New York Dolls fan club. Their punk sound further influenced his tastes, and Morrissey eventually found his way into a short-lived punk band known as The Nosebleeds. The Nosebleeds didn't last, but Morrissey didn't lose his passion for making music.

Morrissey found another band which did not last, then spent some time writing books, including one on his favorite band, the New York Dolls. He eventually met Johnny Marr in 1982, and they formed a partnership that would lead to his most successful band, The Smiths. From 1982 through 1987 Morrissey fronted the band as they enjoyed success on the UK charts and overseas. Tensions between Morrissey and Marr grew to a breaking point, and Marr departed in 1987, effectively bringing The Smiths to an end.

Morrissey took only six months to release his debut solo album, Viva Hate. The album reached #1 in the UK and eventually went Gold. Morrissey then released a series of successful singles that he intended to be on a follow-up album, but delays ended up placing them on a compilation album called Bona Drag released in 1990.

His next two albums Kill Uncle and Your Arsenal saw limited success on the charts. A series of personal losses effected Morrissey in 1994, which informed the writing and recording of Vauxhall and I. The single "The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get" enjoyed chart success in the UK and the album would go on to reach Gold. Morrissey stated he felt this album one of his best.

While still recording and touring throughout the rest of the 1990s, by 2002 Morrissey was without a record deal. He geared up for a world tour nonetheless, one filmed for a documentary. With renewed interest thanks to the tour and documentary, Morrissey once again found a label and released You Are the Quarry in 2004. Peaking at #2 in the UK and #11 in the US, it was one of his most successful to date. He followed that up with Ringleader of the Tormentors, which hit #1 in the UK.

Morrissey keeps making new music while embarking on regular tours. Rolling Stone called Morrissey one of "The 100 Greatest Singers of All Time," and he has been an inspiration to and major influence of countless aspiring singers and songwriters. Don't miss this icon of alt rock and hear that famous voice for yourself.
