The Smashing Pumpkins is an alternative rock band that formed in Chicago, in 1988. Since then though, there have been several changes in the band’s lineup. The band mainly consisted of Billy Corgan, James Iha, and D’arcy Wretzky, who have been there from day one. Their songs have a sense of different genres in guitar heavy sounds. Such as dream pop, gothic rock, heavy metal, electronica, psychedelic rock, progressive rock, and shoe-gazing. Billy Corgan has been the main influencer of the band. He is the group’s primary songwriter. His songs and albums have been described as, “anguished, bruised reports from Billy Corgan's nightmare-land.” Many of the lyrics which Corgan has written for the Pumpkins have been based on emotions. The lyrics have a personal muse and very strong indictments for those close to him, and the band. Many musicians such as Gerad Way and Nelly Furtado have been and still are influenced by The Smashing Pumpkins.
The Smashing Pumpkins initially made a name for themselves with their second album, Siamese Dream in 1995. They gained an extensive fan following in 1995 with their Mellon Collie and Infinite Sadness tours. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 album chart. Selling over 20 million copies in the US alone, it became one of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful albums to influence the 90’s. However, the band disbanded in 2000 due to internal disputes and drug usage leading to diminishing sales.
The Pumpkins went their separate ways for six years until Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlin reconvened. They produced and released a new album called Zeitgeist. In 2007, the band toured again. In 2009, Corgan started a new series of recordings which were entitled, Teargarden by Kaleidyscope which had featured a lineup of different musicians. This had resulted in to their 2012 and 2014 releases, Oceania and Monuments to an Elegy, and another forth-coming release. In 2015, Corgan announced a tour with the collaboration with Marilyn Manson.
