At The Drive In have been a name in American punk for over two decades, but over that time have seen many ups and downs. The began as a group of Texans who had a mix of influences in their sound on account of their collective heritage. They were signed after a show in LA, which they played to nine people in total. Some of those people were record execs, and after an amazing show that blew them away, they offered to release At The Drive In’s debut album. The debut was called Acrobatic Tenement, and cost just $600 to make. During the mid-late 90s, At The Drive In toured relentlessly with other American punk bands, and gained a huge following. This continued until a rather explosive and surprise break up in 2001, after the band walked off stage during their set at Big Day Out in Australia. The crowd were too crazy, and the band feared for safety. After asking the crowd to stop moshing, and they continued anyway, they quit the stage after three songs. The band were due to tour North America, but issued a statement just days before the first date, saying they were physically and mentally exhausted, and would be on indefinite hiatus.
Several side-projects emerged from this hiatus, allowing the musicians to focus on the kinds of music they had been struggling to agree on. The Mars Volta were an experimental, psychedelic rock outfit, and Sparta was a more traditional American rock band. It was over ten years before the band came back together to play live again. Initially, guitarist Omar Rodriguez-Lopez had stated that the band would continue to play the songs that fans loved, but that they would probably not write new material. However, that has changed in the last four years, and At The Drive In have recorded a new album, set for release in May, called in.ter a.li.a. Some of this brand new music will be played live when At The Drive In head out on tour this year.
