Vocalist Aaron Bruno, who was nicknamed AWOL in high school, launched AWOLNATION in 2009 as a way to express himself and break free of the collaborative songwriting process he had experienced with other bands. Distancing himself from the grunge-style he used with Home Town Hero and the classic-rock approach of Under the Influence of Giants, Bruno took to mixing seemingly incompatible genres in a style reminiscent of Beck. AWOLNATION, which includes Bruno’s longtime bandmate Drew Stewart on guitar, presents a fusion of bass-driven electronic synthesizers, live instruments, and contemporary pop that fits into both the alternative dance and alternative rock categories.
The band’s first full-length album, Megalithic Symphony landed platinum status in the United States and double platinum in Canada. Diehard fans and casual listeners alike responded to the group’s first single, Sail, which reached number four on the Billboard Rock Songs chart. The song gained wide exposure after The History Channel used it in an advertisement for Vikings. It later appeared in the film Disconnect and the TV shows So You Think You Can Dance and The Vampire Diaries. This follows Bruno’s track record of placing his haunting and evocative songs in film and other media, including commercials, TV programs like The Big Bang Theory and Veronica Mars, and movies like Fifty Shades of Gray. Although AWOLNATION has failed to live up to the initial success of Sail, they landed a hit with a reworked version of Bruce Springsteen’s I’m on Fire and continue to tour in support of their 2015 album Run. Awolnation Run Tour
AWOLNATION heads out on tour in support of its 2015 release, Run. One song fans can expect to hear from that album is the electronic, fist-pumping Hollow Moon (Bad Wolf) which reached number one on Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart. Their synthesized rock music with a driving dance beat are sure to keep fans on their feet and feeling as energized as the band as AWOLNATION moves through several of their best-known songs, from Sail to Thiskidsnotalright. Although the Run Tour is making stops at several music festivals, you can also find AWOLNATION making layovers in a number of big cities on both coasts (and places in between), from Los Angeles to Philadelphia, Dallas to Denver. One thing fans should note is that guitarist Drew Stewart, a founding member of the band and longtime friend of Aaron Bruno, has left the tour and been replaced by Iron Tom guitarist Zack Irons. While this may change the sound a bit, fans should still get plenty of what they love on AWOLNATION’s Run Tour, from the pulsing rhythms of the bass guitar and drums to the modified voice of lead singer Bruno.
