When DJ and music producer Lorin Ashton adopted the name Bassnectar, he couldn’t know how big an impact his eclectic and far-ranging blend of electropop dance beats would have on the breakbeat and dubstep world. Bassnectar blended his youthful love of grunge, thrash metal, and hardcore hip-hop with African and Caribbean beats to create alternately heart-pounding uptempo jams and gentle, downbeat solos filled with political and social messages. His first album, 2001’s Freakbeat for the Beatfreaks, took the electronic music industry by storm, although it was his fourth release just three years later, Diverse Systems of Throb, that took him out of the niche market and gave him a large following beyond his native California. His ability to weave together the underlying rhythms of such iconic bands as Metallica, Nirvana, and N.W.A brought him a fan base almost as diverse as his musical tastes. Producing music at a frenetic pace for his own indie label, Bassnectar bridged the gap between straight-out ‘70s funk and synthesized early-‘90s distortion. By 2011, Bassnectar reached the upper end of the Billboard charts before finally cracking the Top 40 with his 2012 release Vava Voom, the first of two Top 40 albums. A heavy touring schedule and his own festivals have allowed him to build a devoted following capable of filling Madison Square Garden, as well as perfect his genre-turning tones. These experiments, and his sheer ability to draw an audience into his show, earned Bassnectar fourth place in DJ Times’ 2013 America’s Best DJ competition. Bassnectar 2015 Tour
Bassnectar has an act built for the stage, and he pulls out all the stops for 2015’s Into the Sun Tour. While most DJ’s play other people’s music in an attempt to get an audience up and dancing, Bassnectar mashes together the seemingly incompatible genres of metal and Afropop into seamless songs designed to make his audiences think while dubstepping. He’ll be bringing his breakbeat sound to solo shows as well as festivals, where he is frequently the concert highlight. Although the Into the Sun tour launched nearly a year ago to support the album of the same name, it’s still going strong in 2015 thanks to a collection of powerful opening acts and Bassnectar’s innate ability to construct a set list that gives his performance a dynamic and climactic conclusion. Among the fan favorites Bassnectar has been playing on this tour are Lights, Intro, and Here We Go, as well his biggest single to date, Blow. Bassnectar has developed a knack for playing some of the biggest stages in the United States, so expect him to blow the roof off the smaller venues with a loud and raucous set that comes at you at breakneck speed.
