Bastille is an indie pop band from England. Bastille was formed in 2010 as a solo project by singer and songwriter Dan Smith, but later added Chris Wood, William Farguarson, and Kyle Simmons to the band. Bastille Day, notably, is also Dan Smith’s birthday, July 14 of every year. Bastille’s debut EP was released in 2010 and included two songs, “Flaws” and “Icarus”. Only 300 copies of the EP were made and quickly sold. Their follow-up EP was titled Laura Palmer, released in 2011 and resulted in the band signing with Virgin Records. Following the release of their EP, Bastille performed at several UK festivals, including Glastonbury, The Isle of Wight, Redfest Reading and Leeds Festival.
Immediately following their festival tour, the band recorded a two part mixtape, Other People’s Heartache, which they distributed online for free. Bastille’s first single released through Virgin Records was “Overjoyed”, released in 2012. “Overjoyed” would be the lead single on their first full-length studio album, Bad Blood, which featured several other hit singles such as “Pompeii” and a re-release of “Laura Palmer”. After the release of the album, Bastille again performed on the festival circuit in 2012, playing at all of the major UK festivals.
Bastille joined the band Muse on The 2nd Law Tour in 2013. Later in 2013, Bastille released the Haunt EP, followed by a reissue of their first studio album, titled All This Bad Blood. Bad Blood quickly became the best-selling digitally downloaded album of all time, with each subsequent single from the album being one of the most downloaded singles of all time. In 2014, Bastille released another free mixtape titled Other People’s Heartache, Part III, which consisted of entirely new and never before heard content, including several live remixes Bastille performed from various artists. Bastille continued to release new music into 2015, including “Hanging”, which will appear on their 2016 album.
