Catfish and The Bottlemen are an indie rock band from North Wales who have cracked a tough market in North America, thanks to the catchy, indie pop sound that they themselves have described as “inside the box”. Festival sets and a great online presence have helped them grow in popularity, and they are a known name by many fans of the indie genre.

The band was first formed in 2007, when they were known as The Prestige. Former lead guitarist Billy Bibby taught fellow founders and still current members Van McCann and Benji Blakeway to play guitar. The band would play anywhere and everywhere they could in order to build a fanbase, including playing in car parks of venues after other people’s gigs. These artists included Kasabian, one of the most popular British indie bands at the time.Between 2009 and 2013, Catfish and The Bottlemen continued to get their music out any way they could. BBC 6 Music, the alternative music radio station, championed them, and they were eventually signed in 2013 to indie label Communion Records. The following year, Island Records took the band on, and they released their first singles. Their music was bumped up to Radio 1 playlists, and their popularity grew.

Catfish and The Bottlemen played at the Governors Ball in New York in 2014 before releasing their debut album, The Balcony. The following year, they played on the Late Show with David Letterman, and toured the US; playing both in smaller venues and at festivals. In 2016, the band’s second album was released, with critics likening it to established British indie sounds such as Johnny Marr, The Mystery Jets and The Kooks. This year will see Catfish and The Bottlemen take this music on the road around Europe, Australia and North America. Not only will they be playing festivals, but they are headlining their own shows.
