Celtic Thunder is an Irish singing group and stage show formed in 2007 and is perhaps best known for their theatrical shows and eclectic musical style. Although the group has had a number of lineup changes over the years, Celtic Thunder is now made up of Neil Byrne, Emmet Cahill, Ryan Kelly, Damian McGiny, and Michael O’Dwyer and are backed by the Celtic Thunder Band, consisting of Dave Bakey on guitar, mandolin, and banjo, Seána Davey on harp and concertina, Laura Durrant on cello and double bass, Nicole Hudson on violin, David Munro, who is also the musical direction, on piano, John O'Brien on pipes, whistles, bodhran, mandolin, and Declan O'Donoghue playing the drums.
The group also has a massive creative team and stage production crew to help manage their elaborate shows and the elaborate set pieces they are known for, including lots of visual effects and highly choreographed singing that draws inspiration from Celtic mythology. Celtic Thunder won named Top World Artist by Billboard in 2008, 2009 and 2011, with their first three albums ranking in the top ten for World Albums. After the release of their live CD/DVD Celtic Thunder: The Show and the studio album Celtic Thunder: Act Two in 2008, the band embarked on a tour around the US, where they performed in 50 cities, selling over 125,000 tickets. After that, Celtic Thunder did a tour around Canada where they performed to sold out crowds.
Their third studio album and second live concert DVD was title Take Me Home released in 2009, followed by Entertainment! In 2010. Celtic Thunder is known for releasing their original studio recordings in a live recording format, because the band feels that a live show is the only way to get the full experience of their music.
