Chvrches is a Scottish electronic band formed in 2011. Chvrches consist of Lauren Mayberry, Iain Cook, and Martin Doherty. Chvrches was ranked in the fifth position on BBC’s Sound of 2013 list of the most promising new music talent. Chvrches’ premier song was “Lies”, released in 2011, followed by “The Mother We Share”. It wasn’t until 2013 that Chvrches premiered their song “Recover” and the highly anticipated Recover EP. The band performed at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas in 2013, winning the inaugural Grulke Prize for Developing Non-US Act at SXSW. In 2013, Chvrches supported Depeche Mode on four of their shows on The Delta Machine Tour 2013. The band’s debut album, The Bones of What Your Believe, was released on Virgin Records in 2013. Many of their songs from that album, including “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” and “We Sink”, have been licensed and featured on television and in video games. Chvrches’ second studio album, Every Open Eye, was released in 2015 which included the single “Leave a Trace”. The second single from Chvrches’ second studio album was “Never Ending Circles”, for which they released a music video on their YouTube channel.
Their song “Clearest Blue” was also featured in a music video on Chvrches’ YouTube channel. Although Chvrches music style is often regarded as electronic dance music, they also have a strong synthpop influence in their sound and are influenced by other artists such as Madona, Throbbing Gristle, Prince, Tubeway Army, Laurie Anderson, Depeche Mode, Kate Bush, Cyndi Lauper, Elliot Smith, Whitney Houston among many other pop and electronica artists. During live performances, Mayberry will often play synthesizers while singing. Cook also plays synthesizers in addition to guitar and bass while Doherty is on a third set of synthesizers and samplers in addition to singing backup vocals. In 2015, Chvrches performed at many venues and music festivals throughout Europe, the U.S., the U.K., Canada, Japan, and nearly every part of the world. Their international popularity has contributed greatly to their music, despite the band having only been around for a few years. Chvrches has performed at Firefly Music Festival, SXSW, Field Day, Canadian Music Fest, Sasquatch! Music Festival, The Great Escape, Pitch Festival, T in the Park, Electric Picnic, Melt!
