Roger Hodgson is an English musician, singer and songwriter as well as the frontman and founding member of the progressive rock band Supertramp. Roger Hodgson is perhaps best known for singing the Supertramp songs “Dreamer”, “Give a Little Bit”, “Breakfast in America”, “Take the Long Way Home”, “The Logical Song”, “It’s Raining Again”.
Roger Hodgson first learned to play guitar at the age of twelve. He quickly started to compose his own music and gave his first concert at his school at age thirteen. At age 19, Roger Hodgson played guitar on a recording for People Like Us on the unreleased songs “Duck Pond” and “Send Me No Flowers”. Roger Hodgson later auditioned for Island Records, who set him up with a band called Argosy where he performed alongside Elton John (whose name was Reginald Dwight at the time). Argosy broke up after only a few recordings and Roger Hodgson responded to an ad for a guitarist for the band Supertramp. Of the 93 guitarists who auditioned, Roger Hodgson was the only one chosen to join the band.
Supertramp released their debut self-titled album in 1970, followed by Indelibly Stamped, which saw Roger Hodgson writing a majority of the band’s material. Roger Hodgson’s song “Dreamer” from the Supertramp album Crime of the Century became a huge hit for the band. After relocating to the US, Supertramp released their album Breakfast in America, which sold over 20 million copies and was the band’s best-selling record. In 1980, Supertramp released their live album titled Paris, followed by Famous Last Words in 1982, which included Roger Hodgson’s popular compositions “It’s Raining Again”, “Don’t Leave Me Now”, “C’est le Bon”, “Know Who You Are” and “Crazy”.
Although Roger Hodgson left Supertramp in 1983 in order to spend more time with his children as they were growing up, he would later return to the band in 2001. Roger Hodgson’s songs are characteristic of their philosophical and often spiritual themes. Roger Hodgson had a successful solo career with his albums In the Eye of the Storm in 1984, Hai Hai in 1987, and Open the Door in 2000.
