Cyndi Lauper has had an extensive and powerful career in music, acting and activism. As well as penning and recording some of the best loved pop music of the 80s, Lauper is a well-respected activist for LGBT rights and feminism. Breaking into the pop music scene in 1983 with her first solo album, “She’s So Unusual”, Lauper saw unprecedented success from her hit singles “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”, “Time After Time” “She Bop” and “All Through The Night”. Lauper was one of the first women to take advantage of the success of MTV, paving the way for artists like Madonna and Janet Jackson. Her videos were interesting and narrative, and reached out to everyday young women and girls.
Lauper insisted on writing her own music as much as she could, often having to battle her record company in the process. She collaborated with artists such as Billy Joel, Nile Rodgers and The Bangles, and performed at The Wall in Berlin in 1990 with some of the biggest names in pop music at that time.Cyndi Lauper is also famous for her work with LGBT rights movements, and feminism. She was the pioneer of the WWE Wrestlemania tradition of celebrity guests, appearing as a guest manager for Wendi Richter at the inaugural event. She has since been celebrated as such a pioneer by the company, and allowing female wrestlers to perform in exciting ways, alongside their male counterparts.
Though Lauper’s music has been well received by critics and fans over the years, she has not seen the same commercial success as her debut since. She was unsupported by her record company after the release of her fourth album “Hat Full of Stars”, as the content of her lyrics included themes such as homophobia, racism and domestic abuse. However, her reworking of “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”, as part of her greatest hits release, brought the classic song to a new generation, featuring a more 90s pop sound.Since the 90s, Lauper has continued to write and record music, perform live and act to great critical acclaim in “Mad About You” and “Queer as Folk”. In 2012, the musical version of Kinky Boots debuted, with the music co-composed by Lauper. It was a runaway success, receiving 13 Tony Award nominations the following year, winning 6 of them.
