Saxophonist Dave Koz decided that he would become a professional musician just after graduating high school. He had no problem following up on that decision and just weeks after graduating, Bobby Caldwell recruited Dave Koz to play with him on tour. Dave Koz was a session musician throughout the 1980s and performed in several bands, including Jeff Lorber and Richard Marx’s band, with whom he toured throughout the 1980s. Dave Koz was also the band leader for a brief time on CBS’ show The Pat Saiak Show with Tom Wolf. It wasn’t until 1990 when Dave Koz decided he would pursue a solo career with Capital Records.
Dave Koz’s debut solo album was self titled, which he then followed up with Lucky Man, The Dance and Saxophonic, the later of which he was nominated for a Grammy Award as well as an NAACP Image Award. Around the time that Dave Koz’s album Lucky Man was released, he was asked to record a new theme song for the ABC television show General Hospital, on which Dave Koz would later make a guest appearance.
Dave Koz had his own radio program in 1994, The Dave Koz Radio Show, which featured the latest music and interviews with the biggest names in jazz. Dave Koz left the radio show to start his own record label, Rendezvous Entertainment, along with Frank Cody and Hyman Katz. Between 1990 and 2015, Dave Koz released 20 studio albums, Eps, compilations and greatest hits records.
Dave Koz hosted a weekly 30-minute television program called Frequency in which he interviews other musicians, followed by performing the saxophone along with one of their songs. Dave Koz is also the bandleader on The Emeril Lagassee Show, which also features guitarist Jeff Golub, keyboardist Philippe Saisse, bassist Conrad Korch, and drummer Skoota Warner. Dave Koz’s famous annual event, the Dave Koz & Friends Jazz Cruise, has been a reoccurring hit with fans year after year, however, tickets are limited and often difficult to come by.
