Die Antwoord is a South African rap and rave group that first came together in 2008 in Cape Town. Die Antwoord was formed by rapper Ninja, his sister Yolandi Vi$$er, and DJ Hi-Tek as part of the zef counterculture movement in South Africa. Die Antwoord vocalist Ninja fronted many South African hip-hop groups before forming Die Antwoord, such as The Original Evergreen, MaxNormal TV and The Constructus Corporation. Die Antwoord is best known for their artistic performance style inspired by Roger Ballen and their cult fan following.
The group will frequently switch from English to Afrikaans and Xhosa in their lyrics. In Afrikaans, the native language of South Africa, Die Antwoord means “The Answer”. Their debut album was titled $O$ and released in 2009 for free to fans over the internet. The album features South African rappers Garlic Brown, Scallywag, Jack Parow, Isaac Mutant, and Jaak Paarl as well as the American music producer Diplo who helped create the song “Evil Boy”. Die Antwoord’s song “Enter the Ninja” gain international attention and resulted in a deal with Interscope Records, however, in 2011, Die Antwoord founded their own record label, Zef Recordz.
Die Antwoord’s second album Ten$Ion, they put out on Zef Recordz in 2012. Die Antwoord’s second album featured the lead single “Fok Julle Naaiers” and the popular follow-up singles “I Fink U Freeky”, “Baby’s On Fire”, and “Fatty Boom Boom”. Die Antwoord released their third studio album titled Donker Mag in 2014 along with music videos for “XP€N$IV $H1T" and “Pitbull Terrier”. In 2016, Die Antwoord released their fourth studio album We Have Candy which features production from Cypress Hill’s DJ Muggs. In 2016, Die Antwoord toured around the world in support of the release of their album 2016 album, We Have Candy. They performed at music festivals like Drop Out Festival in Istanbul, Turkey, Orange Festival Warsaw in Poland, Zetadelle Berlin in Germany, Delahoya Festival in Romania, We Are Electric Festival in Netherlands, Reading Festival in United Kingdom, Leeds Festival in United Kingdom, and many more.
