Empire of the Sun is an electronic music duo from Sydney, Australia. Formed in 2007, the band is a collaboration consisting of Luke Steele from the alternative band The Sleepy Jackson and Nick Littlemore from the electronic dance music duo, Pnau. In 2008, Empire of the Sun released their debut album, Walking on a Dream, which brought them international success after it was certified as a double platinum album in Australia and gold in the United Kingdom. Their title track from the album, “Walking on a Dream”, became a number one hit single internationally. Both Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore were already in their own bands, both of which were signed to EMI. They met in 2000 when Luke’s A&R executive, Simon Moor, introduced them to one another in a bar in Sydney. After which, the two collaborated on numerous projects Littlemore would help write songs for The Sleepy Jackson, such the song “Tell the Girl That I’m Not Hangin Out” on their 2003 album, Lovers.

Steele had plenty of artistic input on Littlemore’s band, Teenager. The two worked on two songs for the Pnau ‘s 2007 album, including “Freedom” and “With You Forever”. It was this collaboration which saw the two developing their own project together, which they called “Steelemore”. Although the two lived in different cities across Australia and mostly collaborated by emailing one another bits of their songs, by 2008 they had enough material to record their debut album as Empire of the Sun, Walking on a Dream. Their titled track from the album immediately received ample radio air play on Australian radio stations. Their second single from the album, “We Are the People”, peaked at the number 24 position in Australia. Fueled from their fans from their past music projects, Steele ad Littlemore were able to launch an international tour immediately following the release of their debut album. Although the two would continue working with their other bands in the years that followed, they would return to the studio in 2013 to produce their second album, Ice on the Dune. Following the album’s release, Empire of the Sun embarked upon yet another international tour.
