Tijs Michiel Verwes grew up in the city of Breda in the Netherlands, becoming interested in music at an early age. Verwes would start his career DJing at school parties and eventually be named one of the top 5 DJs of the year nine years running.
Verwes moved from school parties to clubs in the 90's. He eventually signed with a label and put out various tracks and EPs under a variety of names. Verwes' first brush with wider fame was a highly charted remix of the electro band Delerium's track "Silence." His remix of "Silence"reached #3 on the Billboard Dance charts.
Now "DJ Tiësto," Verwes released his first album, In My Memory, in 2001. A star rapidly on the rise, Tiësto's first effort reached 25 on the Album Chart in his homeland. The next year he would be named DJ Mag Top DJ of the year, a title he would retain for 3 years running. During this time he began to tour extensively, performing in front of sold out crowds in Europe.
Tiësto's second album, Just Be, arrived in 2004, spawning the hit "Traffic," which became the first track without vocals to top the Dutch charts in twenty-three years. The same year he would achieve the unique distinction of being the only DJ ever to perform at the Olympic Opening Ceremonies when he wowed the crowd of 72,000 at Athens' Olympic Stadium for ninety minutes.
With the release of Elements of Life in 2007, Tiësto dropped the "DJ" and continued on using only his single mononym. 2009's Kaleidoscope signaled a move away from purely trance music, featuring a variety of other electronic music genres. The album was popular on iTunes, reaching the top 10 when released in October.
Tiësto contributed music to games in the DJ Hero series of video games, becoming a playable character in the second of the series. He continues to make music while touring all over the world almost non-stop since 2002 and earlier. A live show from Tiësto is not just an experience for the ears, but the eyes as well. Don't miss one of the biggest names in electro and trance music when he performs near you.
