Fiona Apple has built a career on bending genres and bucking the conventions of modern music, with critics hailing her as the answer to bubblegum pop stars like Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. Although Apple's debut album in 1996 certainly had its fair share of poppy hits, it was her angst-riddled lyrics and controversial music videos that allowed her to draw parallels to other '90s pop rock stars like Alanis Morissette. Apple's unique blend of jazzy undertones and scintillating voice allowed her to find a niche outside of the most popular genres of the day to appeal to a wide range of demographics.

Apple's debut album, Tidal, was one of the hottest records of the mid-'90s, gave the artist a Grammy Award and reached platinum status when she was only a teenager. The singles "Criminal" and "Shadowboxer" climbed up the charts steadily and helped her establish pop respectability, attracting indie, jazz and rock fans in the process. However, Fiona Apple's on-again off-again relationship with the public alienated some of her mainstream fans, while deepening her artistic legend with others.

In 1999, Fiona Apple released her second album, When the Pawn..., as it became known. The title actually consisted of a 90-word poem, which was an ambitious choice for a sophomore album title by any music critic's standards. The album peaked at No. 13 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart and yielded the hit "Fast As You Can," which still receives consistent airplay on modern rock stations all over the country.

Over the next five years, Apple toured sporadically and was in and out of the studio working on her next album. By the time her third album Extraordinary Machine, was released in 2005, Apple had built up some serious street cred and was warmly-received by critics, fans and new listeners alike. She won a Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album for her work and cemented her status as a genre-bending superstar.

With the arrival of her fourth album just around the corner and a summer tour planned for 2012, Fiona Apple's career path is taking another upward trend. Over more than a decade, Apple has been one of the rare artists to break in and out of the social consciousness and still be able to keep a hefty legion of fans along the way.
