The Flaming Lips, a rock band formed in 1983 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, uses lush and multi-layered instrumentals to produce psychedelic rock music. The Flaming Lips are perhaps best known for their elaborate live performances in which they will often wear costumes and use various stage props, such as balloons, confetti, puppets, as well as elaborate video projections and stage lighting effects. The Flaming Lips’ debut self-titled album was recorded in 1984, followed by Oh My Gawd!!! In 1987 and 1989’s Telepathic Surgery as well as In a Priest Driven Ambulance. The Flaming Lips’ 1992 album, Hit to Death in the Future Head, was their first major label release, followed by 1993’s Transmissions from the Satellite Heart, which featured their popular single, “She Don’t Use Jelly”. One of the band’s most popular albums, Clouds Taste Metallic, was released in 1995 to critical acclaim. The Flaming Lips followed this up with Zaireeka in 1997.
Their breakthrough album came in 1999, titled The Soft Bulletin. After a few years of successful touring, The Flaming Lips released Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robot in 2002, followed by At War with the Mystics a few years later in 2006 and Embryonic in 2009. Their 2012 album, The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends was yet another very successful album for the band. Just a year later, The Flaming Lips released their album The Terror, and then With a Little Help From My Fwends in 2014. The Flaming Lips also produced a low-budget indie film titled Christmas on Mars, which was debuted at the 2008 Sasquatch Music Festival. Their song “Do You Realize?” was adopted by Oklahoma as the state’s official song, which was unanimously approved by the Oklahoma senate.
The Flaming Lips recorded a 23-track experimental album with Miley Cyrus which they released on the internet for free in 2015. Over the years, The Flaming Lips have won 3 Grammy Awards, including Best Rock Instrumental Performance for “Approaching Pavonis Mons by Balloon” in 2003, Best Rock Instrumental Performance for “The Wizard Turns On” in 2007 and Best Engineered Album for At War With the Mystics in 2007.
