Few bands have changed as much over the years as Green Day. While they entered the music scene as pugnacious pop-punk rockers, they have since morphed into outspoken political activists. Although they have matured from their raw punk tunes of the early-to-mid '90s, Green Day is still as popular as ever and won't stop rocking any time soon.
Green Day was formed in the late 80s with Billie Joe Armstrong as the lead guitarist and vocalist, Mike Dirnt on bass and John Kiffmeyer on drums. Tre Cool replaced Kiffmeyer in 1990. After their debut album made little waves outside of their native California, the band's second album proved to be much more successful. Released in 1992, Kerplunk! was a critical favorite, and eventually went on to sell 500,000 copies thanks in large part to tracks such as "Welcome to Paradise" and "Christie Road," both of which remain popular among Green Day fans. While Kerplunk! may have helped get their foot in the door, Green Day reached new heights when they released Dookie in 1994. The record hit the number two spot on the Billboard 200 charts and eventually went on to win the Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album. It also spawned some of Green Day's most well-known songs including "Longview," "Bakset Case" and "When I Come Around."
Throughout the rest of the '90s and into the early 2000s, Green Day continued to produce hit after hit. Their 1997 "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" has become a favorite among high school grads (despite its sometimes-misinterpreted lyrics), and their 2000 album Warning signaled a distinct change in sound.By the time 2004 rolled around, most fans assumed they had Green Day pegged, but the band's 2004 rock opera American Idiot changed all that. Channeling much of the frustration felt by the American people, Armstrong and company produced and emotionally-charged album that has gone on to sell 6 million copies in the U.S. thanks to songs such as "Wake Me Up When September Ends" and "Holiday."After the release of Green Day's 2009 album 21st Century Breakdown, it has become obvious that the band has turned a corner on their career. In 2012 Green Day released three albums, titled Uno, Dos and Tre, which were not as successful as their previous two albums.
In 2016 Green Day marked their return with their first new album in four years. Revolution Radio, released in October 2016, features the band’s first Billboard Mainstream Rock Chart number one song in seven years, “Bang Bang.”
