In 2014, singer Halsey released her first EP titled Room 93 to critical acclaim. She is perhaps best known for her hit singles, “Ghost” and “Hurricane”, which appeared on both Room 93 as well as her 2015 studio debut album, Badlands. Halsey comes from a long line of musicians and a musical family. She grew up playing violin, viola, cello, and acoustic guitar. Although she initially performed under various stage names when she began playing live shows, she decided on Halsey, which is an anagram of her real name, Ashley. Halsey’s music career began by posting videos of herself covering songs such as Taylor Swift’s “I Knew You Were Trouble” on YouTube. She is heavily influenced by rappers such as Notorious B.I.G., Slick Rick, and Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, despite her light female vocals. Halsey’s first single was titled “Ghost”, which she posted to SoundCloud to critical acclaim in 2014. A few months later, she released her five track EP, Room 93. She later opened for The Kooks during a 2014 tour, playing major cities all over the US, and a 2015 tour with Young Rising Sons and Imagine Dragons, where her set list included new songs “Colors”, “Control”, “Haunting”, and “Roman Holiday”. Halsey went on to perform at South by Southwest 2015 in Austin, Texas, where her popularity surged.
In 2015, Halsey released her debut studio album, Badlands, a concept album which quickly reached the number 2 spot on the US Billboard charts. She immediately followed the release with the 2015 Badlands Tour. Halsey has since been featured in a number of interviews as well as live performances on Last Call with Carson Daly. During live performances, Halsey invokes high levels of energy into her indie pop vocal style while making the singing experience very intimate for the audience.
