Aaron Lewis may be best known as the lead singer for the popular rock band Staind, but the Longmeadow, Massachusetts, native recently turned his attention to songwriting and has embarked on an ambitious solo career. Though he still records and performs with Staind, Lewis is attempting to make a name for himself and, by all accounts, appears to be succeeding.
Lewis got his start with Staind more than 15 years ago, when he and three friends began performing together in September of 1995. After five years of toiling in obscurity, the band hit it big with their third studio album, 2001's Break the Cycle. The record contained their two most iconic tunes, "It's Been a While" and "Outside," and helped propel Staind to mainstream success.
Although Break the Cycle was immensely popular, their next album, 2003's 14 Shades of Grey, proved to be even more successful. In its first week, the record sold 2 million copies, and the single "So Far Away" topped the Billboard Rock Charts. Staind continued to release albums throughout much of the 2000s, but Lewis eventually decided to take time off to pursue his own interests.
The frontman is widely considered to be one of rock and roll's most recognizable lead singers of the last 15 years. Along with his unique voice and style, Lewis is a renowned songwriter as well, and has earned three Grammy nominations for his writing.
In addition to his passion for music, Lewis has managed to run a successful charity that is aimed at reopening an elementary school in Worthington, Massachusetts, that recently closed due to budget cuts. In an effort to raise the necessary funds, Lewis has been putting on shows, including one at his old high school, in which all of the proceeds go toward his cause.
Lewis has also managed to record his first solo album. The yet-to-be-named record was completed in July 2010 and is said to boast a country style, which is a divergence from Staind's typically heavy sound.
Despite having made the foray into fundraising as well as a solo career, Staind is not going anywhere anytime soon. The band is expected to begin recording its first album in since 2008 by the end of 2010, meaning fans will not have to wait very long to hear Lewis leading Staind once again.
