Black Sabbath is a legendary heavy metal band hailing from Birmingham, England. Black Sabbath was formed in 1968 by guitarist and songwriter Tony Iommi, bassist and lyricist Geezer Butler, singer Ozzy Osbourne, and drummer Bill Ward, although there have been many changes in the band members over the years. Although their style of music has evolved dramatically over the years, Black Sabbath is known to perform everything from blues rock to heavy metal with occult themes, themes of drug abuse, political corruption, and apocalyptic prophecies. Black Sabbath notably helped pioneer the genre of heavy metal and was named the Grated Metal Band of All Time by MTV, placing second in VH1’s 10 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock.
The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006 and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005. They have also won two Grammy Awards, both form Best Metal Performance. Black Sabbath has sold over 70 million records around the world. Some of the most popular Black Sabbath albums include Master of Reality, Paranoid, and Black Sabbath. Black Sabbath has had countless hit singles and powerful metal albums which have influenced many popular musicians today.
Black Sabbath is perhaps most famous for being fronted by both Ronnie James Dio and Ozzy Osbourne, both of whom gave the band its heavy, doomy sounds and ominous, prophetic lyrics. The band is also well-known for being one of the first metal bands in their time to record very unstructured songs which were different than most of the other music on the radio at the time of their rise to fame. Black Sabbath concerts are infamous for the live stage theatrics, usually of macabre origin, heavy metal hit songs, and bringing together hardcore fans from many different generations.
