There aren’t many bands quite like the Deftones. Though their roots are firmly planted in the heavy metal world, the band can fall in any number of niche genres including alternative metal and progressive rock. With such a varied style, it’s no wonder that the sextet from Sacramento has such a large and loyal fanbase.
The band started as many others, from prolonged jam sessions between friends. Chino Moreno and Stephen Carpenter were the two founding members, but soon after they brought in additional members they were signed to a record contract, and by the early ‘90s they were off and running.

Though they received almost no airplay from their first album, 1995’s Adrenaline, thanks to extensive touring and word-of-mouth praise, the Deftones managed to grow their fan base considerably after its release. As a result, the record was a relative success and sold more than 200,000 copies. Perhaps most responsible for the popularity was the positive reviews their debut earned. Many critics praised the way the band managed to create and control a chaotic sound that was unlike anything else in popular music at the time. It has remained a popular album more than 15 years after its release and reached the 1 million mark in 2008 thanks to the popularity of songs including “Engine No. 9.”

While Adrenaline put them on the map, the Deftones have continued to be one of the most innovative acts ever since. Thanks to the considerable buzz surrounding their first record, their sophomore effort, Around the Fur was a hit. Propelled by songs such as “My Own Summer (Shove It)" and “Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away),” the band became favorites among the alternative rock crowd.

The Deftones found mainstream success with the 2002 album White Pony, which is a favorite among fans and critics alike. The record earned them a Grammy for the single "Elite," and its other tracks proved popular as well including "Digital Bath" and "Change (In the House of Flies)."

Despite turmoil caused by the car accident of one of the members, the Deftones have managed to push through the strife and continue to be a force within the music world.
