As one of the preeminent rock guitarists of the last 20 years, Joe Satriani has managed to be a force in the music industry without ever being tied down to a specific band. Since the 1980s, Satriani has played with some of the most famous musicians in the business and continues to be a renowned instructor whose tutelage has effected rock and roll history.

Satriani got his start as a member of several bands including the Squares and more notably the Greg Kihn Band. Though both groups were on their way out of the industry, his time playing for them in the early '80s gave him experience and money to continue his career. He released his second album, Surfing with the Alien, in 1987 and it was his first popular record. The album is the only one of Satriani's to go platinum and produced a trio of successful tunes. Along with the title track, "Satch Boogie," and "Always with Me, Always with You," earned considerable radio play.

Fresh off the success of his album, Satriani released Flying in a Blue Dream. Although it was not as radio ready as his previous record, it gained a significant amount of exposure thanks to its use in Say Anything..., which has become one of the the most iconic films of the '80s.

By the 1990s, Satriani began to carve out a niche fan base, and with the release of 1992's The Extremist, he became a critic favorite as well. The album included a number of hits that received a great deal of airplay, including "Summer Song," "Cryin','" and "Friends." Later in the decade, Satriani decided to use his popularity to launch the G3 tour, which included some of the most talented instrumental musicians around including Eric Johnson and Steve Vai. Though the lineup has changed in the passing years, Satriani has continued the G3 tour periodically.

In the years since launching the tour, Santriani has continued to record and release albums, including 2002's Strange Beautiful Music and 2004's Is There Love in Space? Most recently, Satriani was involved in the Experience Hendrix Tour, which enlisted the help of a long list of musicians to pay tribute to Jimi Hendrix.

In October 2010, he released his latest album, Black Swans and Wormhole Wizards. At 54-years-old and with almost 30 years in the business, there is no sign Satriani is leaving anytime soon.
