Sammy Hagar, also known as The Red Rocker, is an American hard rock and heavy metal singer, songwriter, and musician. During his career, that has spanned over 40 years, he has recorded multiple number one hits and performed with some of the great names of rock, including a stint as the lead singer of the band Van Halen. A Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member with Van Halen, and Grammy award winner, Sammy Hagar has had a hand in recording multiple platinum records. Not only a successful musician, Hagar also founded Cabo Wabo tequila and has multiple restaurants. In 2015 Sammy recorded and toured with his band, The Circle. Sammy Hagar was born on October 13, 1947 in Salinas, California. He grew up in Fontana, CA, and credits his work ethic from growing up in poverty. Hagar began performing in 1967 in various bands in Southern California. In 1973 he got his big break as the front man for the band Montrose. After departing from the group after 4 years, Sammy began his solo career with Capitol Records. With Capitol, Hagar had limited success, and not as much support as he had hoped for, so he split with Capitol and joined Geffen Records. At Geffen Records, Sammy released his first Billboard hit with “Your Love is Driving me Crazy”, and later released his best known song “I Can’t Drive 55”.
In 1985, Van Halen parted with lead singer David Lee Roth. Sammy Hager was auditioned in July and hired to replace Roth. Hagar’s tenure with Van Halen included four multi-platinum, number one albums, and multiple singles that cracked the Billboard Hot 100. He departed from the band in 1996 after disputes with the band’s manager and the Van Halen brothers.
