Tool is an influential rock band from Los Angeles, California. Formed in 1990 by drummer Danny Carey, guitarist Adam Jones, and vocalist Maynard James Keenan. Tool’s debut studio album, Undertow, was released in 1993, followed by their second album, Aenima, in 1996. The sound that they articulated for themselves was that of alternative metal, but also an experimentation of visual arts and personal evolution. These themes were consistent on their third album, Lateralus, in 2001. Their 2006 album, 10,000 Days, was an international success for the band. Tool uses many intricate processes while writing, recording, and mastering their studio albums, which they say is why they take so long to release each album.
Tool’s music is often considered progressive rock, psychedelic rock, art rock as well as alternative metal. Tool’s music is often considered “the thinking man’s metal band”. Tool will often employ unusual time signatures in their music, challenging the listener’s preconceived e notions of what makes up a traditional rock song. Tool has won three Grammy Awards for their music and have sold millions of albums around the world.
Tool live shows are characteristic of their emphasis on visual art and video displays as much as the band’s live performance. Tool band members will often trigger random samples during live performances, switch out instruments mid-set and switch performance styles constantly for any given song they are performing. The band has headlined major music festivals around the world, including Coachella, Lollapalooza, Download Festival, Roskilde, Big Day Out, Bonnaroo, and has performed live with many of metal’s finest artists such as Kirk Hammett, Phil Campbell, Serj Tankian, Tom Morello, and many more.
