As pugnacious as she is talented, Joan Jett is among the most famous female rock stars in music history. Since she burst on the scene in the early '80s with the Blackhearts, her songs have become classics and placed her in the annals of rock history alongside such legendary icons such as Fleetwood Mac's Stevie Nicks and Heart lead singer Ann Wilson.
Jett got her start in mid-70s as the lead singer and guitar player of The Runaways. The band enjoyed a moderate level of success in their four years of performing, including popular tunes such as "Cherry Bomb" and "Queens of Noise." And although a number of the band members went on to other projects, none were as successful as Jett, who decided to try out a solo career.
The move turned out to be a good one, and she released her debut solo album, Bad Reputation, in 1980. The record featured a number of popular songs, including "Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah)" and "Bad Reputation." However, soon later she teamed up with several others and formed Joan Jett and the Blackhearts.
With her now-famous backing band by her side, Jett released the 1982 album I Love Rock 'n Roll, which went on to be one of the most classic albums of the decade. Though it included a number of popular songs, including "Crimson and Clover" and "Bits and Pieces," it was the album's title track that really struck a chord with music fans. "I Love Rock 'n Roll" stayed atop the Billboard Hot 100 Charts for more than a month has since been covered by numerous other individuals including Britney Spears.
Since the success of the album, Jett's influence on the music scene has not wavered. Aside from a number of other albums and a continuous string of concert tours and performances, it is hard to deny the indelible mark she has left on the music of today. Though she's more than 50-years-old, Jett still regularly plays the with the Blackhearts alongside such iconic bands as Aerosmith and Green Day, and has featured prominently as several festivals including the Warped Tour. Given her track record she definitely will not be slowing down anytime soon.
