John Prine is an American country and folk song, songwriter and recording artist who has helped to influence the country music scene since the 1970s. John Prine received a Lifetime Achievement Award from BBC’s Radio 2 in 2003 and was inducted into the Nashville Songwriter’s Hall of Fame that same year. John Prine learned to play guitar at the age of 14. John Prine recorded his debut self-titled album in 1971, and after being discovered by Atlantic Records, he recorded another three records including Diamonds in the Rough released in 1972, Sweet Revenge released in 1973 and Common Sense released in 1975, followed by a compilation album, Prime Prine: The Best of John Prine, that came out in 1976 and included his most popular songs from his previous 4 albums.
Following the release of John Prine’s compilation album, he left Atlantic Records and signed a deal with Asylum to released his 1976 album titled Bruised Orange, followed by the popular album Pink Cadillac in 1979. John Prine would release one more album with Asylum, Storm Windows in 1980, before he signed a 3 album deal with Oh Boy Records to release German Afternoons in 1986, his live recording John Prine Live in 1988, and The Missing Years in 1991. 1993 was a good year for John Prine, who tour in cities all around the US and released a Christmas album, A John Prine Christmas as well as Great Days: The John Prine Anthology on Rhino Records. Although John Prine’s popularity began to decline with the release of his 1995 album Lost Dogs and Mixed Blessings charting at 159 on Billboard’s Top 200 albums, his 1997 live album Live on Tour which did not make it to the charts, and his 1999 In Spite of Ourselves, just barely coming in at the 197 position
John Prine made a comeback in 2005 when he released Fair and Square, which peaked at the number 55 position on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart – his bestselling album of all time. John Prine’s 2010 album In Person and On Stage hit 85 on the albums charts and his 2011 record Singing Mailman Delivers reached the 94 position.
