Johnny Mathis is an American jazz and pop singer famous for releasing over 73 Billboard charting singles. Johnny Mathis has sold over 350 million records to date, many of which have achieved gold or platinum status. According to the Guinness Book of World Record, he is the third best selling recording artist of all time. Johnny Mathis is frequently thought of as a romantic singer who incorporates elements of jazz, traditional pop music, Brazilian music, Spanish music, soul music, rhythm and blues, soft rock, Broadway theatre, Tin Pan Alley, blues, country, disco and other varieties of musical styles into his songs.

Johnny Mathis has recoded six Christmas albums from 1968 to 2015. His musical career was founded on jazz singing and Johnny Mathis was part of a jazz sextet at age 19. Johnny Mathis’ first record was released in 1956, titled Johnny Mathis: A New Sound in Popular Song. The release of the album helped Johnny Mathis book more gigs at jazz lounges and nightclubs in New York City. Early on in his career, Johnny Mathis produced some of his most popular songs, including “Wonderful! Wonderful!” and “It’s Not for Me To Say” as well as contributed to several major motion pictures, such as Lizzie in 1957, before inevitably going on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1957 to bring his style of popular music to millions around America. Johnny Mathis has over 300 television guest appearances and has been a frequent guest on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and Jay Leno.

Johnny Mathis has won numerous awards in his lifetime, including being inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame three times for three separate recordings. Once in 1998 for his song “Chances Are”, then in 2002 for “Misty” and again in 2008 for his recording of 1957 recording of “It’s Not For Me To Say”. It wasn’t until 2003 that Johnny Mathis was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences for his creative contributions of outstanding artist significance to the field of recording.
